"Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Wednesday that the US Department of Defence had issued a formal letter of concern to Microsoft over its use of Chinese nationals in servicing Pentagon cloud environments - a practice he called 'a breach of trust.' It comes after investigative reporting by ProPublica revealed that Microsoft had allowed engineers in China to support sensitive DoD cloud systems, supervised remotely by US-based 'digital escorts' with security clearances but often lacking the technical expertise to vet for threats. “The use of Chinese nationals to service Department of Defence cloud environments – it’s over," Hegseth said on a video published on his X account. "For nearly a decade, Microsoft has used Chinese coders remotely supervised by US contractors to support sensitive DoD cloud systems. The program was designed to comply with contracting rules, but it exposed the department to unacceptable risk. I mean, if you're thinking America first and common sense, this doesn't pass either of those tests,” Hegseth continued. He ordered "a third-party audit of Microsoft’s digital escorts program, including the code and the submissions by Chinese nationals" - an audit that he noted would be free of charge for US taxpayers. “Did they put anything in the code that we didn’t know about? We are going to find out," Hegseth added. China has not commented at the time of publication, but Beijing has previously urged Washington 'to stop using the issue of cybersecurity to vilify and smear China.' Hegseth further instructed that all Department of Defence software vendors must terminate any Chinese involvement in their systems. “We expect vendors doing business with the Department of Defence to protect US national security ahead of profit maximisation,” he noted. Microsoft issued a statement in July that it has ended the practice of using China-based engineering teams for DoD-related support, noting it will no longer allow such personnel to provide technical assistance for US military cloud services."
