"Hundreds of journalists came together to pay tribute to their colleagues who lost their lives in Gaza at a vigil organised by the UK's National Union of Journalists outside Downing Street on Wednesday. Footage shows protesters rallying with Palestinian flags, banners, and signs, reading out the names of journalists who have been killed in the enclave, and condemning Israel's assaults on the on-field reporters. The police were seen removing opposition activists and angry protesters in order to maintain public order. "If Israel is not held to account for breaching the protections afforded to journalists in Gaza under international law, the international community is giving the green light to every country around the world that we can be killed with impunity simply for doing our jobs," former LBC journalist Sangita Myska addressed the crowd. "When people doing exactly the same job as me [...] suddenly become a capital offence... It's incredible to me that the most noble thing that we can do and why we're driven to this job," noted journalist Chris Proctor. Palestinian journalist Ahmed Alnaouq, meanwhile, stressed the 'moral, ethical and professional duty' to voice support for the killed colleagues in Gaza. "I think it's time that we acknowledge the people [...], acknowledge the sacrifices that they take for the sake of a truth," he remarked. The vigil was held in memory of six journalists who were killed in an Israeli attack near the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis on Monday. This brings the total number of journalists killed since the beginning of the conflict in Gaza to 247, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The Israeli military confirmed it had targeted the area and announced on Tuesday that 'six of those killed in the incident were terrorists', following a preliminary investigation ordered by the chief of staff. The Hamas-Israel war erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, killing 1,139 people and kidnapping more than 200, according to Israeli officials. Since then, Israel has mounted a large-scale military campaign across Gaza, with 62,895 killed, according to Palestinian authorities at the time of publication."
