Caffeine royalty - Panama smashes coffee world record with Geisha at $30,600 per kilo

"Caffeine royalty - Panama's Geisha coffee sets new world record at $30,600 per kilo Panama's specialty coffee farm Hacienda La Esmeralda set a new world record by selling its renowned Geisha coffee for 30,600 USD (26,186 EUR) per kilogram, cementing the country's reputation as the producer of the world's most exclusive brew. Footage filmed in Boquete on Thursday shows estate owner Rachel Patterson sampling brews, while a barista prepares coffee beans, some already ground, for auction. Rachel Patterson said the achievement reflects two decades of collective work across the country's specialty coffee sector. "It has not only been Esmeralda – it has been all the producers of Panama, who have worked very hard so that Panamanian Geisha has gained this worldwide reputation." "The coffee comes from Ethiopia. We have managed to produce it here in Panama in a very different way, where it has attributes and flavours that are different," she added, highlighting how Panama's climate and innovation give Geisha unique qualities. Patterson noted that strong demand, especially in Asia, has allowed reinvestment. "Because it sells at a price that is above the traditional coffee price – it gives us the means to innovate more, to look for new places, to do experiments and to sell coffees that are much smaller in quantity but much higher in quality," she explained. The latest auction results underline the success of Panama's strategy of competing through excellence rather than volume.  "First place went to Dubai. [...] They took 20 kilograms of washed Geisha, which made the biggest news because it sold at 30,600 USD (26,186 EUR) per kilogram. Second place went to natural Geisha, and it went to JD Coffee in China," shared the owner. Panama has established itself as a global leader in luxury coffee, with estates such as Hacienda La Esmeralda standing out.  In 2025, a lot of washed Geisha coffee reached a record price of 30,204 USD (25,847 EUR) per kilogram at the Best of Panama auction, while the auction generated 2.86 million USD (2.4 million EUR) in total sales, surpassing the 2024 record. In 2023, the country exported coffee worth 46.8 million USD. This boom has also boosted ecotourism in regions like Boquete, combining a sensory experience with the country’s natural beauty."

'Game that connects you to Colombia' - Bogota welcomes 12 countries for Tejo World Championship

"Bogota hosted the third edition of the Tejo World Cup, an event that gathers diplomatic delegations in Colombia to learn and enjoy the country's national game.  Organisers said the initiative aims to send a message of peace and harmony, demonstrating that, despite political and social differences, sport has the power to unite. Footage filmed on Friday shows diplomats from more than ten countries participating in matches at Tejo La Embajada in Bogota. Players were seen hurling metal discs at clay courts rigged with explosives, with the traditional scoring system awarding up to nine points for a 'moyona' - a hit in the centre of the board. "It is very exciting to experience things that connect you to the country of Colombia, such as playing the national game of Colombia, which brings a lot of emotion. We are also making an effort to win, it is the spirit of the game that counts," said Dr. Vineet Kumar, the First Secretary of the Indian Embassy in Bogota For his part, organiser Sebastian Otero highlighted: "We are very pleased to welcome them here at Tejo la Embajada, in what is already the third edition of the Tejo World Championship" In this edition, delegations from 12 countries were present, including Argentina, Canada, China, Colombia, the United States, India, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Tejo, considered Colombia's national sport, has been played in the Andean region for more than 500 years."

'Through meticulous refinement we craft perfection' - Chinese forces display new flags ahead of grand Victory Day parade

"Preparations for Chinaэs Victory Day parade continue in grand style as the four strategic PLA forces - aviation, cyberspace, information support, and joint logistics - unveil their new flags ahead of their debut at the much-anticipated occasion. Footage released on Saturday shows the intensive training of the forces for the parade, with soldiers marching in step under the fresh flags. The exact location of the footage cannot be independently verified. "It is a great honour for me to carry the flag of the aerospace force past Tiananmen Rostrum and receive the review of the commander-in-chief," expressed Xu Xi, flag bearer of the aerospace force formation. The joint logistics support force formation, meanwhile, features female soldiers marching with equal precision as their male counterparts, embodying the unit's motto. "An elite soldier is not defined by gender, and the battlefield makes no distinction of rank [...] We hold to the same standards, we march in the same rhythm. From simple repetition we forge excellence; through meticulous refinement we craft perfection," remarked Zhang Lin, an officer of the joint logistics support force formation. Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered the unveiling of the flag designs for the four branches ahead of the 98th anniversary of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) on August 1. This introduction of branch flags signifies the creation of a new military flag system for the People's Army, which includes the PLA flag, the flags of the army, navy, air force, and rocket force, as well as those of the aerospace, cyberspace, information support, and joint logistics support forces. China holds its landmark 80th anniversary Victory Parade in Beijing on September 3, attended by many world leaders and dignitaries."
