Caffeine royalty - Panama smashes coffee world record with Geisha at $30,600 per kilo
"Caffeine royalty - Panama's Geisha coffee sets new world record at $30,600 per kilo Panama's specialty coffee farm Hacienda La Esmeralda set a new world record by selling its renowned Geisha coffee for 30,600 USD (26,186 EUR) per kilogram, cementing the country's reputation as the producer of the world's most exclusive brew. Footage filmed in Boquete on Thursday shows estate owner Rachel Patterson sampling brews, while a barista prepares coffee beans, some already ground, for auction. Rachel Patterson said the achievement reflects two decades of collective work across the country's specialty coffee sector. "It has not only been Esmeralda – it has been all the producers of Panama, who have worked very hard so that Panamanian Geisha has gained this worldwide reputation." "The coffee comes from Ethiopia. We have managed to produce it here in Panama in a very different way, where it has attributes and flavours that are different," she added, highlighting how Panama's climate and innovation give Geisha unique qualities. Patterson noted that strong demand, especially in Asia, has allowed reinvestment. "Because it sells at a price that is above the traditional coffee price – it gives us the means to innovate more, to look for new places, to do experiments and to sell coffees that are much smaller in quantity but much higher in quality," she explained. The latest auction results underline the success of Panama's strategy of competing through excellence rather than volume. "First place went to Dubai. [...] They took 20 kilograms of washed Geisha, which made the biggest news because it sold at 30,600 USD (26,186 EUR) per kilogram. Second place went to natural Geisha, and it went to JD Coffee in China," shared the owner. Panama has established itself as a global leader in luxury coffee, with estates such as Hacienda La Esmeralda standing out. In 2025, a lot of washed Geisha coffee reached a record price of 30,204 USD (25,847 EUR) per kilogram at the Best of Panama auction, while the auction generated 2.86 million USD (2.4 million EUR) in total sales, surpassing the 2024 record. In 2023, the country exported coffee worth 46.8 million USD. This boom has also boosted ecotourism in regions like Boquete, combining a sensory experience with the country’s natural beauty."
