"Dozens of Banco do Brasil employees gathered in front of the headquarters in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday to support the role of their public bank in Brazil's economy. Recently, the bank has reportedly been the target of false information and attacks from supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Footage shows union members and employee associations, as well as bank workers, holding banners and chanting slogans to emphasise that these types of attacks not only threaten the institution's credibility both within and outside the country but also fuel attempts to weaken Brazil's public financial system. "The attacks promoted by the Trump administration, which tried to interfere with the system and with the functioning of Brazilian democracy, and also by the far-right movement here in Brazil, include the dissemination of fake news and the encouragement of looting Banco do Brasil with false information that in reality seeks to destabilise the economy," accused Jose Ferreira, president of the Bancarios do Rio de Janeiro union. Ferreira also emphasised that the Trump administration is trying to distract society with fake news in order to remove a judge who is handling the case involving former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro. "We have seen around the world how the far right has behaved, its struggle to reach power, and then, once in power, it has carried out a true massacre of the functioning organs of democracy. At this moment, we see Trump trying to remove a judge. We see the same thing in other countries and here, during the campaign, while they try to distract society with fake news, they are actually working in Congress and seeking to form a majority of senators next year and thus prepare a coup after Lula's term," he said. Rita Motta, a union leader, noted that the hostility towards Banco do Brasil is also a response to her country's initiative to use an alternative currency for trade transactions instead of the dollar. "Brazil is part of the BRICS, and that is a threat. It is a threat of a change in the international currency, of the dollar no longer having any importance," she stressed, adding that it represents a 'loss of financial and political power for the United States'. Union leaders also stressed that Banco do Brasil is not only a profitable institution but also a crucial component of social programmes and national development. They urged political figures to respect its independence and called on the government to ensure stronger protection for public banks. The Brazilian prosecutor's office reportedly requested that the federal police investigate the spread of fake news on social media, including posts by Eduardo Bolsonaro, a deputy and the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, as well as other right-wing figures."

Karen Davey says her calls for help were dismissed until she was admitted to hospital
Ed Davey is boycotting the state banquet being held in Donald Trump's honour. Lib Dem leader Ed Davey has said he will boycott a lavish banquet at Windsor Castle being hosted by King Charles for Donald Trump next month. The US president will visit the UK for an unprecedented second state visit from September 17 to 19. Davey said he was protesting against the US president’s failure to use his influence with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end the war in Gaza. He said: “If Donald Trump tells Benjamin Netanyahu to stop this, it ends tomorrow. “If Donald Trump uses his influence over Qatar and other Gulf states that Hamas relies on, all the hostages could come home tomorrow. “Boycotting the banquet is the one way I can send a message to Donald Trump and Keir Starmer that they can’t close their eyes and wish this away. We have to speak up, they have to act. Donald Trump has to end this humanitarian crisis.” But an unearthed clip from just three months ago has revealed that Davey used to believe that turning down the invitation to attend the banquet would be a sign of “disrespect” for the King. He told the BBC’s Newsnight: “If he does come, and I was invited by King Charles III, I would go because I’m not going to disrespect our monarch. “And do you know what? With the MAGA entourage that will come with Donald Trump, I think he needs all the support he can get.” “With the MAGA entourage that will come with Donald Trump, I think the King needs all the support he can get" Liberal Democrats leader, Sir Ed Davey, says he would attend a state banquet for President Trump, if invited, to avoid "disrespect" to "our monarch". #Newsnight pic.twitter.com/QRD02IvDmV — BBC Newsnight (@BBCNewsnight) April 29, 2025 Davey has been criticised by his political opponents for the banquet snub. Shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel said: “The is an act of deep disrespect to His Majesty the King. It shows appalling judgment. “America is our closest ally and security partner, and the world’s biggest economy. Ed Davey has once again proved he is not a serious leader and more interested in pathetic gesture politics.” But a Lib Dem source said: “Priti Patel has a brass neck to talk about disrespecting the royal family. The Conservatives partied in Downing Street while our Queen mourned her husband. “Ed deeply respects the King and hasn’t taken this decision lightly. “He has had to weigh up the most effective way to send Donald Trump a message on Gaza. This is about principles, not gestures, so it’s no wonder the Conservatives don’t understand it.” Related...
