Around 100 Filipinos awaiting rescue in Cambodia’s scam hubs – envoy

MANILA, Philippines — Around 100 Filipinos are still awaiting rescue in Cambodian scam hubs, the Philippines’ envoy in Phnom Penh said on Wednesday. Flerida Ann Camille Mayo, Philippine ambassador to Cambodia, said it is hard to get them out of the scam compounds due to tight security. “As of today, we have around 100 [Filipinos] waiting to be rescued by the police,” Mayo said in a radio DWPM interview. On the other hand, 45 Filipinos are safe in detention centers while their exit clearances are being processed, according to Mayo. She also said the total number of rescued Filipinos has […]... NBA player Terry Rozier asks judge to throw out betting charges

NEW YORK— Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier’s lawyers are asking a judge to throw out sports gambling charges that have kept him off the court this season, arguing that the government overreached by turning a private dispute over bettors’ use of nonpublic information into a federal case. In a motion to dismiss made public on Tuesday, Rozier’s lawyers argued that the government’s theory of the case — that he prevented sportsbooks from making informed decisions about accepting certain bets — runs afoul of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that narrowed the federal wire fraud statute. New Epstein files dump contains multiple Trump references

A new batch of Jeffrey Epstein files released Tuesday contains numerous references to United States President Donald Trump, including documents detailing flights he took on his then friend’s private jet, and other claims that his Justice Department described as “untrue and sensationalist.” The latest release contains reams of previously unseen material from the investigation into Epstein, a wealthy US financier who died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking underage girls. A first collection of heavily redacted files made public last Friday sparked criticism that the Justice Department was deliberately excluding references to Trump. Trump figures prominently, […]... The complicity of creditors: Can borrowing serve development instead of corruption?

The complicity of creditors: Can borrowing serve development instead of corruption?

The Philippines’ fiscal outlook for 2026 reveals a troubling paradox.  With revenues projected at ₱4.64 trillion and expenditures proposed at ₱6.793 trillion, the government faces a deficit of at least ₱2 trillion.  Despite persistent corruption scandals—ranging from overpriced materials to ghost flood control projects—banks and creditors continue to lend. This practice signals that repayment capacity matters more than developmental outcomes. In effect, financial institutions prioritize debt servicing over governance integrity, creating a moral hazard that perpetuates fiscal deficits and undermines genuine economic progress.  The Philippines’ fiscal story from 2016 to 2025 is  shown in Table 1  .  Revenues have consistently […]...
