Generally fair weather prevails over PH, except for isolated evening rains —Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines – State weather bureau Pagasa expects generally fair weather this Wednesday over the entire archipelago, except for isolated and scattered rain showers, especially in late afternoon or evening. Weather specialist Chenel Dominguez of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said in a 5 a.m. briefing that it has not monitored any low-pressure area inside or outside the country’s area of responsibility. She said the convergence of hot and cold air, or shear line, has been affecting the Visayas, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Surigao del Norte, and Dinagat Islands, bringing cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms. Meanwhile, Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, the rest of Bicol Region, Aurora, and Quezon would likely have overcast skies with light rain due to the northeast monsoon locally known as ‘amihan.’ The same weather system would bring cool, dry winds over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon. Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rain showers would prevail in these areas, according to Pagasa. The rest of Mindanao, it added, would experience partly cloudy to overcast skies with isolated rain showers due to the localized thunderstorms.

Two US Fed officials back keeping interest rates unchanged

WASHINGTON, United States — Two US central bank policymakers made the case Tuesday to keep interest rates unchanged for now, as officials await incoming data on jobs and inflation. “Based on my forecast, we could be on hold for quite some time,” said Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack in a speech in Ohio. “Rather than trying to fine-tune the funds rate, I’d prefer to err on the side of patience as we assess the impact of recent rate reductions and monitor how the economy performs,” she added. In a speech to a separate forum in Texas, Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan […]... Keep on reading: Two US Fed officials back keeping interest rates unchanged

US retail sales flat in December as consumers pull back

WASHINGTON, United States — US retail sales showed no growth in December, according to delayed government data released Tuesday, missing analysts’ expectations amid heightened scrutiny of the American consumer’s appetite — a key driver of the world’s biggest economy. Overall sales were flat on a month-on-month basis at $735 billion, Commerce Department data showed. This was down from November’s 0.6 percent growth, which saw a boost from the year-end holiday shopping season. But spending appeared to lose steam, undershooting expectations of economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires and The Wall Street Journal who instead expected growth of 0.4 percent. The […]...
