MANILA, Philippines — The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported extensive pre-emptive evacuations as authorities rushed to protect residents in high-risk areas as Super Typhoon Uwan moves across the Philippines. As of 11 a.m. on Sunday, OCD Deputy Administrator Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV said that 270,622 families, or approximately 916,863 individuals, have been moved to safer locations. Region V or Bicol Region accounted for the largest number of evacuees, with 192,765 families, followed by Region VIII (Eastern Visayas) with 32,020 families, and Region IV-A (Calabarzon), 24,209 families. Other regions involved in pre-emptive evacuations included the National Capital Region, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Region I (Ilocos Region), Region II (Cagayan Valley), Region III (Central Luzon), Region IV-B (Mimaropa), Region VI (Western Visayas), and Region VII (Central Visayas). A total of 522 evacuation centers were operational nationwide, with more being prepared as the typhoon moved across the country. Authorities stressed that these measures aimed to protect communities from strong winds, heavy rainfall, flooding, landslides, and storm surges. Local governments were urged to ensure residents followed evacuation directives. Search and rescue teams had been pre-positioned in strategic areas, although officials expressed hope that they would not need to be deployed. “The focus remains on pre-emptive measures to minimize casualties,” Alejandro said. “We continue to monitor the situation closely and coordinate with our regional offices to provide assistance where needed.”
