MANILA, Philippines — A total of 12 floodgates have been unlocked to release water from five major Luzon dams including Angat Dam, the main source of water supply for Metro Manila, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Sunday. Pagasa’s Hydrometeorology Division said three gates each were opened in Angat and Ipo dams both located in Norzagaray, Bulacan; and two each in Ambuklao, Binga and Magat dams. With its normal high water level (NHWL) at 210 meters (m), Angat dam’s reservoir water level (RWL) as of 8 a.m. on Sunday was 208.95m while Ipo’s RWL was measured at 100.05m against its 101.10 m spilling level. Pagasa said Ambuklao’s water level was at 749.48m, almost near its NHWL of 752m. Binga’s is also near its spilling or overflow level at 573.20m against its normal level of 575m. Located at the boundary of the provinces of Ifugao and Isabela, Magat dam, which has 193m NHWL, is releasing water with an outflow of 894.50 centimeters, the weather bureau said. Pagasa hydrologists said local authorities and the public have been advised to be more vigilant especially in Barangay Ambuclao in Bokod, and the villages of Dalupirip and Tinongdan in Itogon, Benguet. Affected areas by Magat dam’s discharge include the towns of Ramon, San Mateo, Aurora, Cabatuan, Luna, Reina, Mercedes, Burgos, Naguillian and Gamu in Isabela as well as Alfonso Lista in Ifugao.
