Kites for conservation! Greenpeace fills Acapulco beach with giant sea-creatures to celebrate landmark ocean protection pact

"The sky over Acapulco was filled with giant whales, manta rays and jellyfish on Sunday as environmentalists, alongside Greenpeace Mexico, staged a colourful Kite Festival to promote ocean conservation and marine protection. Footage shows enormous sea-creature kites soaring above the beach, while families gathered below to take part in environmental education workshops and discussions with marine biologists about the importance of protecting coastal ecosystems. “Well, I wanted to come because I live here in Acapulco and I care about that part of protecting the sea, keeping the beaches clean,” said local resident Mariana Gutierrez. The event also celebrated the entry into force of the Global Ocean Treaty on January 17, a landmark international agreement aimed at protecting 30 per cent of the world’s oceans by 2030 through the creation of marine sanctuaries in international waters. “This is really cool what Greenpeace is doing for us, and that we celebrate achieving the goal that by 2030 we protect 30% of the seas,” Gutierrez added. Organisers said initiatives like the festival are designed not only to raise awareness but also to build long-term community engagement around marine protection in the Mexican Pacific and other coastal regions. “I think it is great because people should not forget that they came to fly kites to take care of the ocean,” said activist Mariana Mencha. Mexico’s accession to the Global Ocean Treaty forms part of its broader commitment to marine conservation, aligning the country with international efforts to strengthen environmental protection and safeguard biodiversity in the high seas."

'US regime change never ends well' - Hundreds gather outside American embassy in Kuala Lumpur in solidarity with Iran after Khamenei's death

"Hundreds of people gathered outside the US embassy in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday to show solidarity with Iran, after the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in US-Israel airstrikes. Footage shows demonstrators holding portraits of Iranian leaders and flags, with speakers condemning the US-Israeli strikes. One of the protesters said that the US campaigns to 'change the regime' never end well. "Today, we stand in solidarity with our friends and the people of Iran, not only because of what is happening domestically in Iran or the attacks taking place, but because we know that this regime change campaign carried out by the United States is not the first of its kind - and nothing good has come out of such regime change campaigns whenever they are carried out by the US," he said. "And we must remember once again that the person who was killed was a religious leader. That could potentially make the situation even more chaotic," he added. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in joint US-Israeli strikes carried out against Iran on Saturday, Iranian state television confirmed. The Supreme Leader, who had ruled since 1989, held ultimate authority over Iran's political, military and religious institutions.  Iranian officials warned that Khamenei's killing would mark a turning point, with the Revolutionary Guard vowing retaliation and declaring that "this great crime will not go unpunished."  Washington and Tel Aviv launched coordinated strikes on 'Iranian military targets' on Saturday, with US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stating their intention to dismantle Iran's missile capabilities.  In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced 'widespread missile and drone attacks' targeting Israel. Reports indicated that US military bases in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq, and Kuwait were also targeted.  The escalations follow three recent rounds of nuclear talks between Iranian and American officials, one held in Muscat and two in Geneva."
