George Gilbert opening up about his exit from the Big Brother house This article contains discussions of antisemitic tropes. Axed Big Brother housemate George Gilbert has opened up about the events that led to his removal from the show . Last week, bosses announced that George had been ejected from the house after receiving multiple formal warnings about his repeated use of “unacceptable” language. It also emerged that George had already received numerous warnings that weren’t aired on the main show as his language would have gone against broadcasting code. This was also the case for the remarks that led to his removal, although it was later confirmed that they came about during a discussion about conspiracy theories . While The Sun previously claimed that George was pulled from the show after “making offensive comments which could be interpreted as antisemitic”, he has now spoken out for the first time in a video shared to his YouTube channel on Monday evening . In it, he explained that on the night before his exit, he and the house had been discussing various theories, including offensive tropes about Jewish people. George Gilbert in the Big Brother diary room “That night, I was a bit caught up in emotions and everything,” he recalled. “The lads were firing questions at me about this, that and the other. ‘Who built the Pyramids?’, ‘is Scientology a cult?’, all different questions, and I did fire myself up, it’s just how I talk. “Maybe I should have picked my words a bit more wisely and been a bit more sensible in the way that I delivered my words. Been a bit more careful with the tone. Things like that. “What I said was, ‘I think it’s terrible that antisemitism is on the rise in London, we need to stamp it out, and my heart goes out to all the Jews who are innocently discriminated against’ [...] s o, I want to put an end to antisemitism or any other form of discrimination. But I said, ‘I do understand why people are sceptical about some Jewish conspiracy [theories], because – this is the line [that got me in trouble] – some of the finest minds in human history, the most intellectual men of all time, have had antisemitic trope in their writing. So, is it a case of no smoke without fire?’. That is why I was kicked out – for that line.” George went on to defend his right to “ask questions”, but acknowledged that his wording “could be a bit provocative unnecessarily”. ITV declined to comment when contacted by HuffPost UK. A spokesperson previously said : “Following repeated use of unacceptable language and behaviour, George has been removed from the Big Brother house with immediate effect and will no longer participate in the programme.” Elsewhere in his video, George claimed he was given his first unaired verbal warning before his first day in the house was even done, after claiming that Adolf Hitler was “misguided” and “did the things that he did because he would have been fed a pack of lies about Jewish people”, which producers told him could be interpreted as “justification for the Holocaust”. Two days later, he said his first formal warning followed, for claiming that because of the rarity of his hair and eye colour, both of which are recessive genes, he suggested he would be “betraying my kind” as a redhead if he were to have a baby with anyone who was not white. Following this, he was given a warning which was aired, when he imitated fellow housemate Sam using gestures that included limp wrists during a game of truth or date. ITV previously made it clear that all contestants are given training in “respect, dignity and inclusion” before entering the Big Brother house. Throughout his time in the house, George had already been a polarising figure, sparking various discussions on subjects like transgender issues , benefits for disabled people , homelessness and migration . He previously said in a statement after his exit : “As a flag bearer of freedom of speech I never hesitate to discuss and question any topic regardless of how contentious it may be. “Sadly, the boundaries of what is deemed offensive are subjective and I evidently went too far this time by crossing their line one too many times. It is a shame that specific debate could not be had and that it has had to end like this.” Help and support: Young Minds offers information on racism and mental health for younger people.
