Morning warning - Air raid sirens blare over Jerusalem as Iran conflict enters third day

"Sirens sounded across Jerusalem on Monday morning as Iran launched a ballistic missile barrage, with the Israeli military saying it was working to intercept incoming projectiles after initially warning of a suspected drone infiltration. The alerts marked the third consecutive day of escalating hostilities following exchanges of strikes between the United States, Israel and Iran. According to Israeli authorities, air defence systems were activated as missiles approached central and southern parts of the country. Residents were instructed to seek shelter as interceptions were carried out overhead. The regional escalation widened overnight as missiles were also launched from southern Lebanon. In response, Israeli jets carried out airstrikes on Beirut early Monday after Hezbollah claimed responsibility for firing rockets and drones at a military base near Haifa. Hezbollah said its attack was conducted “in defence of Lebanon and its people,” linking the operation to the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iranian state television had earlier announced that Khamenei, who had ruled since 1989, was killed in joint US-Israeli strikes on Saturday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that further military action was planned, describing the campaign as ongoing. It comes after the United States and Israel launched a joint strike on Saturday, with US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowing to 'destroy Iran's missiles.' Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has vowed retaliation, announcing “widespread missile and drone attacks” against Israeli targets. Reports have also indicated that US military installations across the region, including in the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq and Kuwait, were targeted amid the escalating confrontation."
