'Reiterate call to exercise maximum restraint!' - IAEA chief warns of soaring nuclear-safety risks as Iran claims Natanz was hit

"Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi on Monday warned of growing nuclear safety risks, saying the UN's nuclear watchdog has seen no evidence that Iran's nuclear sites have been hit, but communication with Tehran is limited. "The IAEA Incident and Emergency Centre is in operation with a dedicated team collecting information and assessing the situation, while bearing in mind limitations in communications caused by the situation," Grossi said. "So far, no elevation of radiation levels above the usual background levels has been detected in countries bordering Iran... Up to now, we have no indication that any of the nuclear installations, including the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, the Tehran Research Reactor or other nuclear fuel cycle facilities, have been damaged or hit," Grossi noted. However, Grossi warned that multiple nuclear facilities across the region, including in the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Syria and the Gulf states, increase the stakes in an already volatile conflict. "I reiterate my call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation," he added, "Nuclear diplomacy is difficult, but it is never impossible." It comes amid conflicting claims about strikes on Iran's nuclear infrastructure. Iran’s ambassador to the IAEA said Natanz, a major uranium enrichment site, had been hit in recent attacks by the US and Israel, a claim which has been denied by Washington. Iranian state media reported the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during the attacks, prompting Tehran to declare 40 days of national mourning and a seven-day public holiday, with all government offices and schools closed as the country prepares for funeral rites. This escalation followed a joint US-Israel military operation against Iran on Saturday, after which US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to 'destroy Iran’s missiles.' According to the Iranian Red Crescent, more than 555 people have died since the start of the war, and at least 131 cities have been impacted at the time of publication. In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced 'large-scale missile and drone attacks' targeting Israel. Reports also indicated that US military bases across the region, including in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq and Kuwait, were struck amid the escalation."
