'We want you back!' - Teachers rally in Caracas demanding Maduro's release and defence of public education

"Thousands of Venezuelan teachers marched on Avenida Universidad in Caracas on Thursday to demand the immediate release of President Nicolas Maduro and reaffirm their support for acting president Delcy Rodriguez as part of Teachers' Day events. Footage shows protesters waving Venezuelan flags and holding banners in support of Nicolas Maduro and his wife, who were captured during the US military operation in Caracas on January 3. "Today teachers of this country are called to appeal for the release of our president, Nicolas Maduro Moro, on the occasion of the celebration of Teachers' Day. I ask that they give us back our leaders," said one of the rally participants. Organisers and union leaders said the protest calls not only for the release of the two leaders, but also for the protection of public education and the defence of national unity. "We must protect education workers, we must protect the women cooks, we must protect teachers, both men and women," said Hector Rodriguez, Minister of Education. Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, congratulated teachers, saying the country's development depends on transformative education and fair recognition of teaching work. She made the remarks on her social media account ahead of delivering her annual address to the National Assembly, where she presented a political, economic and social review of 2025."

'Forging new policy in Venezuela' - Acting President Rodriguez calls for oil reform, urges resolving issues with US through 'diplomatic battle'

"Venezuela's acting president Delcy Rodriguez urged lawmakers to approve reforms to the oil industry to allow greater foreign investment during her first annual state of the nation address to the National Assembly. The proposal is aimed at opening up the country's state‑run oil sector to outside investors and boosting revenue for public services and development projects. Rodriguez said the reforms will allow "those investment flows to be incorporated into [...] fields where investment has never been made and fields where there is no infrastructure." Venezuela's acting president said it was a 'major achievement' in 2025 that the country had 'zero fuel imports,' noting that no gasoline was imported and all fuel supplied in Venezuela was produced by domestic workers. Rodriguez said that from now on "a new policy is being forged in Venezuela" and asked ambassadors, charges d'affaires and diplomatic representatives to convey to their capitals and to the world "the truth of Venezuela," after "an armed aggression coming from a nuclear power." The leader said there is "a stain" in relations with the United States after the capture of Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, but urged resolving differences through dialogue, noting that "we are not afraid to confront diplomatically." "It is not that the Acting President is afraid because she is threatened. No, no, no, Venezuela is threatened, all of Venezuela is threatened, and that is why I call for national unity so that, with sovereignty foremost, we wage the diplomatic battle," she said. She also said that Venezuela has the right to relations with China, Russia, Cuba, Iran, and "with all the peoples of the world," and mentioned that with the United States "we also have the right and to do so in a respectful manner." Rodriguez's speech comes less than two weeks after Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were captured by United States forces and transferred to a federal prison in New York, where they face drug trafficking charges."

Show us something as pathetic as Donald Trump sulking until María Corina Machado gave him her Nobel Peace Prize – we’ll wait

After comments by both María Corina Machado and Donald Trump suggested she might be going to give her Nobel Peace Prize to the petulant child in the Oval Office, the Nobel Prize Committee made it very clear that it is completely non-transferable, and – unfortunately – non rescindable. We wish they’d added ‘Duh!’, and flicked […] The post Show us something as pathetic as Donald Trump sulking until María Corina Machado gave him her Nobel Peace Prize – we’ll wait appeared first on The Poke .

'That looks beautiful… I’m president, I’ll just take them' – Trump honours Florida Panthers at White House after 2025 Stanley Cup win

"The Florida Panthers returned to the White House on Thursday, where President Donald Trump honoured the team following their 2025 Stanley Cup victory. Footage shows Florida Panthers defenceman Seth Jones and captain Sasha Barkov presenting Trump with a golden hockey stick and a framed jersey bearing the No 47. "That stick looks beautiful. That looks beautiful. Maybe I get both. Who the hell knows? I'm president. I'll just take them," Trump said before receiving the souvenirs. He added, "You hate standing here with all this power behind you. But I got power, too. It's called the United States military. I don't care." The Panthers became the 10th franchise in NHL history to secure a championship repeat, winning their second consecutive Stanley Cup with a decisive 5–1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers across six games last June. "You led the finals for over 255 minutes, the most of any team in NHL history, and you denied Canada the Stanley Cup for the 32nd straight year," Trump said. "We have a little competition with Canada," he added jokingly. The visit is part of a long-standing tradition dating back to the 19th century. Championship sports teams have been welcomed at the White House for decades, with the Pittsburgh Penguins becoming the first Stanley Cup winners to receive the honour in 1991."
