'Victims of terrorist groups' - Iran's police chief says 'large number' of security forces were killed during protests

"Iran's police chief Ahmad Reza Radan confirmed on Thursday that a 'large number' of police officers, Revolutionary Guard and Basij officers have been killed in the nationwide protests. "People unfortunately became victims of terrorist groups," he announced in a press conference. "My dear colleagues in the police force, a large number of them were injured, a large number were martyred. Also [...] a large number of Basij and IRGC members were injured and martyred." Radan did not provide specific figures, but added that a 'large number of terrorists' have been identified and arrested. "We promised the people that our security forces, soldiers, Basij forces and the IRGC will not rest until we arrest every one of them. Fortunately, a large number of those who attacked mosques have been arrested and identified," the police chief said. "Those who martyred Basij, IRGC and police officers have been arrested and confessed," he continued. "We are overcoming the terrorists one after another, and God willing, we will ultimately hand them over to the hands of justice." Economic protests have been ongoing in Iran since December, and intensified in recent days and weeks, with Iran accusing President Donald Trump of inflaming tensions - after he warned authorities he could intervene in the event of a potential crackdown. Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei claimed some rioters were destroying property to 'please' the US president. On Tuesday, Trump reiterated to Iranian protesters that 'help is on the way' - and told them to 'keep protesting'. He did not expand on what he meant by 'help,' although the White House has said airstrikes are among the 'many' options. However, Trump appeared to step back from the brink on Wednesday evening - after media reports suggested strikes might be imminent - and said "we've been told that the killing in Iran is stopping" and "there's no plan for executions"."
