'Preserve peace' - Observers commend Cameroon's ‘orderly' presidential vote, urge 'dialogue and consultation’ for potential disputes

"The African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) have praised Cameroon’s 'civic-mindedness' and 'calm' during the presidential election, speaking at a joint press conference in Yaoundé on Wednesday. The vote took place on October 12, 2025. "The mission congratulates the Cameroonian people for the civic-mindedness, calm, tolerance and serenity they demonstrated throughout the process," said the Election Observation Mission of ECCAS, Ndaywel Isidore E Nziem. "The election was largely conducted in accordance with regional, continental and international standards," said AU Election Observation Mission head Bernard Makuza. Observers recommended the timely distribution of voter cards, the proper counting of any uncollected cards at the close of polling, and their sealing and forwarding to the competent authorities in accordance with the electoral code to 'preserve peace.' "Give priority to legal votes in the event of a dispute over the results; give priority to dialogue and consultation with a view to the peaceful resolution of electoral disputes," Nziem urged. "The mission also welcomed the orderly and peaceful conduct of the elections, urging all stakeholders to preserve peace and refrain from any action that could compromise the process," Makuza added. According to local media, 36 observers covered 228 polling stations across all 10 regions. Opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma on Monday declared victory in the presidential election over incumbent President Paul Biya, who is seeking an unprecedented eighth term. Biya's party is being accused of controlling the electoral process, systematic sidelining of strong opposition, and irregularities in conflict-affected areas."
