'Our living conditions must improve... we are suffering greatly' - Cameroonians flock to poll stations as presidential elections kick off

"Cameroonians flocked to a poll station in Douala on Sunday to cast their votes for the 2025 presidential elections. "The elected president should really contribute to development," one of the voters, Seidi Mamadou, said. "Most young people in Cameroon should be able to find employment, and the country should be developed, both economically and socially," he continued. Another voter, Kouchili Fabrice, shared that there are 'many expectations' for the country's next leader. "The employability of young people, where we must try to improve the living conditions of the Cameroonian population, because we are suffering greatly," he added. However, some voters claimed they had faced challenges with the voting. "I arrive, I find my number, and I am told that I cannot vote because a commission has to meet and that I should come back at 3 pm," local Delaisse Nguenang stated. "Here is my number. I am here very early, but I have not been able to vote," he continued. Earlier, Cameroon's incumbent leader and the world's oldest head of state, 92-year-old President Paul Biya, announced his intention to bid for an eighth term in office. Cameroon has been ruled by Biya since 1982, making him one of Africa's longest-serving leaders. Eleven candidates will face off against Biya in the elections after the divided opposition failed to unite behind a joint contender. Over 8 million citizens have registered to vote in the elections."
