Military support - Peruvian Armed Forces arrive at Chile border to reinforce migration control after state of emergency declaration

"Peruvian Armed Forces personnel arrived at the border area of Tacna on Saturday to reinforce migration control and security, after the declaration of a state of emergency in the districts of Palca and La Yarada-Los Palos, made official this Friday through a presidential decree and which will remain in force for 60 days. The Minister of the Interior, Vicente Tiburcio, supervised the initial deployment of about 50 military personnel who will support the National Police of Peru (PNP) in patrolling and surveillance, joining 100 police officers already present in the area. "The Armed Forces patrols integrate as support, so the police is going to work jointly with the Armed Force personnel," declared Tiburcio. Authorities plan to establish at least three permanent crossing points with surveillance to control migration flow. The measure responds to the increase in irregular entries, mainly by Venezuelan migrants coming from Chile, who have decided to leave that country due to deportation warnings issued by conservative presidential candidate Jose Antonio Kast. The government of Jose Jeri has defended this measure as necessary to combat irregular migration and has argued that the entry of unauthorised persons could represent 'threats to citizen security'."
