'Gang of drug dealers, scammers, bribe-takers!' – Milei faces backlash in Corrientes as he defends govt polices, supports Gallardo ahead of elex

"Argentine President Javier Milei led a campaign caravan in Corrientes on Friday to back national deputy candidate Virginia Gallardo, aiming to boost La Libertad Avanza candidates ahead of the October 26 legislative elections. Footage filmed on Saturday shows Milei greeting a crowd of supporters while driving through the streets of Corrientes, accompanied by Virginia Gallardo and his sister Karina Milei, Secretary General of the Presidency of Argentina. During his speech to supporters, the president highlighted the features of the model proposed by his party’s candidates. "This model that we propose, where inflation goes down, where poverty goes down, where extreme poverty goes down, where we end the 'piquetes' (protests), where we are fighting drugs," he explained. Meanwhile, a group of protesters demonstrated against Milei outside the Turismo Hotel Casino, where the president stayed during his visit to Corrientes. "Our presence here was to repudiate the presence of a president who sells out the homeland, a servile man, a looter of our wealth, and [who] gives away our country. And above all, a cruel president. Let’s say, he has set himself as the enemy of the Argentine people, who came to destroy the State," said protester Raul Mayo. "We managed to ensure that this president could not even walk a single centimetre along the Costanera and had to flee the Turismo Hotel with his gang of drug dealers, scammers, and bribe-takers," he added. Another group also demonstrated in favour of Milei, waving purple balloons and Argentine flags. "I came to support the President, Mr President Javier Milei, because I like everything he is doing. I had jobs under all the previous presidents. I had jobs, I worked very well, financially I was doing great, and to support Mr Javier Milei and La Libertad Avanza, I lost my job, but I keep supporting him, I keep standing by him," said Milei supporter Gustavo Capay. Milei's caravan in support of Virginia Gallardo took place as part of his tour across the north of the country to back his candidates ahead of the 2026 legislative elections. It comes amid controversy following the resignation of former national deputy candidate for the province of Buenos Aires, Jose Luis Espert, who stepped down after accusations of alleged links to drug trafficking."
