Fireworks fiesta - UK triumphs in Macau fireworks contest as Brazil makes dazzling debut in explosive finale

"The night sky of Macau sparkled with silver and red sparks and exploding clusters of stars during the 33rd Macau International Fireworks Display Contest finale on Saturday. Footage shows residents and tourists lining the waterfront to enjoy the spectacular conclusion of the contest, which had been illuminating the skyline on several Saturdays throughout September and October. This prestigious annual contest, held since 1989, showcased pyrotechnic companies from around the world, including Australia, South Africa, the Philippines, Japan, China, Portugal, and first-time participants from Brazil. Each team presented approximately 18-minute displays on five Saturdays, with fireworks launched from barges in the sea area in front of the Macau Tower. “It's the final match today, the UK vs Brazil. It was quite spectacular. The weather was good, with smoke and clouds clearing unlike previous days,” remarked spectator Mr Shum. The grand finale on Saturday featured the last two performances from the UK and Brazil, captivating spectators as they witnessed the crowning of the UK as pyrotechnic champion. “It's a Macau tradition. The competition is held every year, showcasing fireworks from different national teams. It's fascinating to see how various countries compete, arrange their fireworks, and make adjustments,” Mr Shum added. Organised by the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the event featured 10 global teams competing over five nights, transforming the enclave into a hub of international artistry and cultural exchange."
