Donald Trump and Keir Starmer at the peace summit. Keir Starmer has been mocked after a toe-curling exchange with Donald Trump at a Middle East peace summit. The prime minister appeared to think he had been summoned to the lectern by the US president as he thanked world leaders for attending the event in Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt. It was held to mark the historic peace deal agreed between Israel and Hamas. Trump said: “Where’s United Kingdom?” Starmer, who was standing on stage behind the president, awkwardly raised his arm before stepping forward to shake his hand. Trump could be heard saying to the PM: “Is everything going good? Nice to have you here.” The president then turned back to the lectern, leaving Starmer apparently unsure what to do next. He then slowly walked back to his previous position alongside the other leaders lined up behind Trump, who said: “These people all came in like 20 minute notice, and I think it’s fantastic.” President Trump pretty much forgot that Keir Starmer was there, he then thought he was going to speak, the look on his face before he walked back. He did nothing and deserved no praise. pic.twitter.com/fhhHESPVns — Chris Rose (@ArchRose90) October 13, 2025 Social media users were unforgiving in their assessment of what had happened. Political journalist Dan Hodges said: “OK, this is utterly humiliating. Keir Starmer thought Trump was inviting him to speak. Then had to walk back.” OK, this is utterly humiliating. Together, they won the Cold War. Thatcher was able to stiffen the spine of President Bush Snr, when he went “wobbly” on Gulf War One. Now, in her stead, we have this forgettable pygmy.” Margaret Thatcher, whose centenary falls today, was an almost equal partner with Ronald Reagan. Together, they won the Cold War. He said: “The context of this (lost on X) is that about 10 minutes earlier President Donald Trump had turned round and asked the Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif (standing behind Trump) to speak. That may have been why Keir Starmer appeared to pause and think he may have to say something.” The context of this (lost on X) is that about 10 minutes earlier President Donald Trump had turned round and asked the Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif (standing behind Trump) to speak. He said: “President Trump, this is your achievement. I thank you for your tireless efforts to deliver this moment. The UK stands ready to support a full implementation of the peace plan.” President Trump, this is your achievement. I thank you for your tireless efforts to deliver this moment.
