Education on hold - Pakistani students urge border reopening with Afghanistan as 3,000 scholars remain stranded for over three months

"Pakistani students residing in Jalalabad, eastern Afghanistan, shared their concerns over the border closure between the two countries, which has persisted for over three months. Footage filmed on Monday at a medical students' hostel shows scholars studying in their rooms, as well as gathering to eat. "For the past three months, we have been stuck here, and tensions have escalated for us. We are all worried about when the border will open. Additionally, we receive messages from home every morning. Our family members are asking if the Torkham border crossing is open or not. We are facing many difficulties," shared one of the students. However, though two primary crossings remain closed, the first group of 28 Pakistani students stuck in Afghanistan was officially permitted to cross the border at Torkham on Monday. According to local media reports, the second batch of students will be permitted through the same crossing on Tuesday, though the border remains shut for everyone else. Another student, who is in his final semester, pointed out that he needs to travel to Pakistan to do an 'internship,' otherwise he won't be able to take the final exam. "The road blockage has had a very negative impact on our minds; we have also established many connections with the embassy, and our representatives have made significant efforts to resolve our issue, but unfortunately, it has not yielded any positive results so far," another student commented. The border between Pakistan and Afghanistan - including the Torkham and Chaman crossings - has been closed since October 12, 2025, after a major military escalation and a breakdown in security and diplomatic ties. Both sides agreed to a ceasefire on October 19 after talks in Doha, but follow-up negotiations in Istanbul failed to produce any further progress."
