"The fourth group of Syrians stranded in Sudan arrived at Damascus International Airport on Sunday evening, after being evacuated as part of a plan coordinated between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in the transitional government and the International Organisation for Migration, the UN migration agency. Footage shows officials from the transitional government welcoming Syrians who had been stranded in Sudan, who later sit in the airport's arrivals hall. Returning citizen Zabiya Al-Hassan expressed her overwhelming joy at returning to her homeland after eight years. “I couldn’t believe my eyes that I had returned to my homeland and saw it with my own eyes,” she said. Describing the ongoing situation in Sudan, she added, “The situation in Sudan is extremely tragic, not only for Syrians but for everyone.” Muhammad Abdulsalam, Head of the Technical Delegation to Sudan and Director of Expatriate Affairs at Syria’s Transitional Government Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced the “successful and final completion of the evacuation of Syrians stranded in Sudan.” “This exceptional humanitarian operation was a proud example of national responsibility and Syrian institutional coordination,” Abdulsalam said, adding, “Since the outbreak of the war in Sudan in April 2023, thousands of Syrians have faced harsh humanitarian conditions, including insecurity, shortages of food and medicine, rising prices, and the collapse of services across Sudan.” The Syrian news agency (SANA) reported that a plane carrying 129 Syrian citizens arrived at Damascus International Airport from Sudan as part of the evacuation operation, bringing the total number of citizens evacuated to 202. According to the agency, on January 11 of last year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the transitional government called on Syrians in Sudan who wished to return to register their information via a dedicated online link. Since fighting began between the Sudanese army and the RSF in April 2023, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of more than 20,000 people, with around 12 million people displaced."
