Operasi cari warga Turkiye masuki hari keenam masih tiada petunjuk

KUALA TERENGGANU : Operasi mencari dan menyelamat (Carilamat) seorang warga Turkiye yang hilang di perairan Pulau Yu masih belum menemui sebarang petunjuk selepas memasuki hari keenam. Pengarah Maritim Negeri Terengganu, Kapten Maritim Hamiludin Che Awang, berkata usaha mengesan Eser Demirkol, 52, belum menunjukkan perkembangan positif walaupun pelbagai kaedah pencarian telah digunakan. - Bernama

Gaza civil defence reports 26 killed in Israeli attacks

Gaza civil defence reports 26 killed in Israeli attacks

GAZA CITY : Gaza’s civil defence agency reported that 26 people were killed by Israeli gunfire and air strikes on Tuesday, including 14 waiting near an aid distribution site. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that eight died from Israeli gunfire near Khan Yunis, while six more were killed and 21 injured in central Gaza while awaiting food aid. The Israeli army stated it is investigating the incidents. Media restrictions in Gaza make independent verification difficult. Thousands gather daily at aid points, including those run by the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, where chaotic scenes and reports of shootings are frequent. Bassal confirmed five deaths from an air strike on a tent in Al-Mawasi, a supposed safe zone. “They say it’s safe, but people die while obtaining aid,“ said Adham Younes, who lost a relative. Mahmud Younes, another witness, described finding injured women covered in blood. Six more were killed near Gaza City, and one near Khan Yunis. Hamas’s armed wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, claimed striking an Israeli command centre in the Morag Axis. - AFP

US trade deficit narrows as imports drop amid tariff tensions

US trade deficit narrows as imports drop amid tariff tensions

WASHINGTON : The US trade deficit narrowed sharply in June as imports retreated more than exports, reflecting the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on global trade. Government data showed the deficit shrank by 16 percent to $60.2 billion, down from a revised $71.7 billion in May. The decline was steeper than analysts expected, driven largely by a 3.7 percent drop in imports to $337.5 billion. Exports also dipped by 0.5 percent to $277.3 billion. The pullback in imports was led by consumer goods, which fell by $8.4 billion, while industrial supplies and materials dropped by $2.7 billion. Auto and parts imports also declined by $1.3 billion. Trump’s tariffs, including a 10 percent duty on most US trading partners and higher levies on steel, aluminum, and autos, have raised costs for businesses importing foreign goods. The trade gap with China alone decreased by $4.6 billion to $9.4 billion in June. In April, Washington and Beijing imposed escalating tariffs, reaching triple-digit levels and disrupting supply chains. However, a temporary agreement in May lowered these duties until August 12. - AFPpix

Trump proposes 250% tariff on imported pharmaceuticals

Trump proposes 250% tariff on imported pharmaceuticals

WASHINGTON : US President Donald Trump revealed plans to impose tariffs on imported pharmaceuticals that could escalate to 250%, alongside new duties on foreign semiconductors. The move aims to push for domestic manufacturing of critical goods. “We’ll be putting (an) initially small tariff on pharmaceuticals, but in one year, one-and-a-half years, maximum, it’s going to go to 150 percent,“ Trump said in an interview on CNBC. “And then it’s going to go to 250 percent because we want pharmaceuticals made in our country.” The announcement follows earlier tariffs on steel, aluminum, and auto parts, part of Trump’s broader trade strategy targeting imports deemed a national security concern. The administration has conducted investigations into pharmaceuticals and semiconductors, signaling upcoming policy shifts. Trump also indicated an imminent increase in tariffs on Indian imports, citing the country’s purchases of Russian oil. “I expect to raise the US tariff on Indian imports very substantially over the next 24 hours,“ he said. The proposed pharmaceutical tariffs mark a significant escalation in trade measures, potentially disrupting global supply chains. Industry analysts warn of higher drug prices, while supporters argue it will strengthen US self-sufficiency. - AFPpix

Russia hints at deploying mid-range missiles after ending INF moratorium

Russia hints at deploying mid-range missiles after ending INF moratorium

MOSCOW : Russia on Tuesday suggested it could deploy intermediate-range missiles after ending a self-imposed moratorium on producing or deploying the weapons, which were banned for decades under a Cold War treaty with the United States. Washington and Moscow had prohibited missiles with a range of 500 to 5,500 kilometres (300-3,400 miles) under the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. But US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal during his first term in 2019, accusing Russia of failing to comply. The Kremlin said at the time it would continue to abide by a moratorium if the United States did not deploy missiles within striking distance of Russia. Russia’s foreign ministry said Monday it was ending the self-imposed restrictions, with the Kremlin hinting on Tuesday that Moscow could soon deploy the previously-banned missiles. “There are no longer any restrictions in Russia in this regard. Russia no longer considers itself limited in any way,“ President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters. Moscow was “entitled, if necessary, to take appropriate measures” on the deployment of the missiles, he said, adding that there would be no public announcement if Russia decided to station the missiles. Putin said last year Russia should start producing mid-range missiles -- capable of carrying nuclear warheads -- after the United States sent some launch systems to Denmark for training exercises. Russia has also accused the United States of sending the systems to the Philippines and Australia for drills. “The United States and its allies have not only openly outlined plans to deploy American land-based INF missiles in various regions, but have also already made significant progress in the practical implementation of their intentions,“ Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement. The move comes after Trump announced the deployment of two nuclear submarines “in the region” amid an online row with Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s former president. Medvedev on Monday said Russia’s foes should be on standby. “This is a new reality all our opponents will have to reckon with. Expect further steps,“ he said in his first social media post since the row with Trump erupted. - AFP

Malaysia launches exporter outreach, reforms post-US tariff deal

Malaysia launches exporter outreach, reforms post-US tariff deal

KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia will implement three major initiatives—exporter outreach, regulatory reforms, and nationwide supply chain mapping—following its recent tariff agreement with the US. The deal reduces tariffs on Malaysian goods from 25% to 19%, effective August 1. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz stated the agreement resulted from “months of intense but thorough as well as methodical negotiations” without compromising Malaysia’s “red lines” in strategic sectors. “Most importantly, we achieved this without conceding on our red lines in key areas,“ he said during his keynote at The Edge Malaysia Centurion Club Awards 2025. Protected areas include foreign equity limits in strategic industries, digital legal safeguards, and halal standards. “The negotiation package was a full-of-nation offer, not just the government, but all (of you)—many companies contributed to that,“ he added. Post-deal, the government’s focus includes: 1. **Exporter Outreach:** Engaging SMEs and multinationals to mitigate tariff impacts. 2. **Regulatory Reform:** Cutting bureaucratic overlaps and outdated rules. 3. **Supply Chain Mapping:** Strengthening industrial roles in global supply chains. Tengku Zafrul highlighted Malaysia’s mid-cap companies (RM100m–RM1b market cap) as vital to the New Industrial Master Plan 2030. “As of March 31, there are 519 such Centurions, critical to our national economic aspirations,“ he noted. - Bernama
