Malaysia’s king visits Russia to enhance high-tech and ASEAN cooperation

MOSCOW : Russian President Vladimir Putin and His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, may discuss cooperation in high-tech, interaction in ASEAN, trade, and military‑technical collaboration during the Malaysian monarch’s visit to Russia. This was the opinion of the Director of the Institute of Asian and African Studies at Moscow State University, Alexey Maslov. “Firstly, this year Malaysia chairs ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations), therefore the discussion will cover cooperation with the entire bloc. “In addition, over the past year, we have outlined a number of projects with Malaysia, including supplies of Russian energy resources to Malaysia and purchases by Russia of a number of products such as fruit and textiles. But the most important topic, perhaps, will be interaction in the field of high technology,“ Maslov told Sputnik, the Russian news agency. Malaysia is one of the most developed countries in the region in terms of science and universities, Maslov said, adding that joint production of microprocessors, system boards, and related technologies is possible. Sultan Ibrahim is the first Malaysian head of state to visit Russia on a state visit since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1967. The visit is scheduled for Aug 5 to 10. Sultan Ibrahim is scheduled to hold talks with Putin on Aug 6, during which the leaders are expected to discuss relations between Russia and Malaysia, as well as relevant topics on the regional and international agenda. - Bernama, Sputnik

KPK reviews new rubber planting allocations in Ranau to aid poverty

KUALA LUMPUR : The Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (KPK) through the Malaysian Rubber Board, is re-evaluating the need to increase allocations for the opening of new rubber planting areas, particularly in hardcore poverty areas such as Ranau. In a written parliamentary reply published on the Dewan Rakyat portal today, the ministry said that, as a proactive measure, several initiatives are being implemented. These include identifying suitable land, providing agricultural input assistance and high-quality rubber seedlings, group-based rubber crop development programme, and offering technical training and guidance for participants. KPK reaffirmed its commitment to supporting smallholders, including those in the Ranau district. “From 2021 to 2024, through the Sabah Rubber Industry Board as the implementing agency, a total of 19 planting blocks have been implemented in the Ranau district, involving 324 participants and covering 1,011.36 hectares, with a total allocation of RM19.21 million,“ KPK stated. The ministry was responding to a question from Datuk Jonathan Yasin (GRS–Ranau) regarding the need for increased allocations to help small-scale farmers open new areas for cocoa, oil palm, and rubber cultivation in the Ranau district to assist the extremely poor. Meanwhile, for the palm oil sector, KPK said the proposal to provide assistance for opening new areas and special subsidies for smallholders is still under evaluation. As for the cocoa sector, Ranau is considered a potential area for cocoa cultivation and is currently one of the largest contributors to cocoa production in Malaysia. “Among the initiatives implemented by the Malaysian Cocoa Board are the new cocoa planting programme, for which over 500 hectares of applications have been received so far — ongoing activities and programmes, and the Cocoa Cluster Complex in Ranau, which is expected to be completed this year,“ KPK said. The ministry expressed confidence that these efforts would gradually reduce the rate of extreme poverty in Ranau. - Bernama

PM Anwar urges fresh look at Asian history beyond colonial views

PM Anwar urges fresh look at Asian history beyond colonial views

KUALA LUMPUR : Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for a deeper appreciation of Asian history that moves beyond colonial narratives, citing Tipu Sultan of Mysore, an Indian ruler who fought against the British East India Company as a model of courage, learning, and tolerance. He said that the contributions of Tipu Sultan and his father Haider Ali, as defenders against British colonial expansion, exemplified the importance of understanding history from the perspective of local and regional leaders rather than solely from Western accounts. “History is not necessarily very kind, one of our scholars Syed Hussein Alatas emphasised the need to reconstruct history because history cannot be written only by the winners or from the perspective of the colonial rulers,“ he said during the launch of the More Than A Day As A Tiger exhibition at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia, here tonight. Also present were the Prime Minister’s wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail; Albukhary Foundation Chairman Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary; Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai and his spouse, as well as representatives from embassies and consulates. The Prime Minister noted that Malaysian history, like that of many others, is often written from the perspective of the British, essentially reflecting Western colonial rule. “Of course, there have been lots of academic accounts, including by Edward Said on Orientalism, but the manner, the whole discipline of history, culture and society is being dictated by certain Western viewpoints,“ he said. Anwar also shared his personal experience visiting Mysore before taking office, recalling his admiration for Tipu Sultan’s modest palace and his protection of Hindu temples, including the ancient temple in Mysore. He also praised Tipu Sultan’s foresight in mastering military technology to confront colonial powers, citing the Mysore Sultanate’s renowned cannons and firearms that had shocked the British in the early wars. “It is not just an ordinary exhibition, but to showcase the history of India and the Muslim world, and the history of the anti-colonial struggle against colonial rule, in this particular case, the British rule. “His diplomatic skills with the few sultanates, Muslims and Hindus in India and his venture into international diplomacy, particularly in persuading the French forces to support his struggle against the British,“ he said. Anwar noted that while Malaysians have historically had limited knowledge of Tipu Sultan and Haider Ali’s legacy, the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia’s exhibition would significantly enhance understanding about the two historical figures. Featuring an extensive collection of artefacts, manuscripts, weaponry and artworks related to Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan, the exhibition will run from tomorrow until January 11, 2026, at Special Gallery 2. - Bernama
