ARSENAL manager Mikel Arteta insists his team has the belief to end their trophy drought this season. The Gunners have not won a major title since Arteta lifted the FA Cup in his first season in charge back in 2019/20. Despite falling short in recent years, Arsenal have re-emerged as consistent contenders under Arteta’s leadership. The club finished second in the Premier League for three consecutive seasons and reached the Champions League semi-finals last term. With significant summer signings, including Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi, Arteta is under pressure to deliver. Nearly £200 million was spent to strengthen the squad ahead of the new campaign. “We know our targets, and there’s a big belief in our ability to achieve them,“ Arteta said ahead of a pre-season friendly. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high internal standards to meet expectations. Arteta also highlighted the role of fan support in creating an “invincible” atmosphere at home. Arsenal begin their Premier League season with a high-profile clash against Manchester United on August 17. – AFP

JERUSALEM : Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz clarified that while army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir may voice his opinions, the military must ultimately follow government directives regarding Gaza. Katz posted on social media platform X, addressing recent Israeli media reports suggesting Zamir opposes plans for a full occupation of Gaza. “The Chief of Staff has the right and duty to present his stance in proper forums, but once political decisions are made, the army will implement them professionally,“ Katz stated. He emphasised his role as defence minister to ensure government decisions are enforced without compromise. Katz linked Hamas’s refusal to release hostages as justification for further military actions to achieve war objectives. Chief of Staff Zamir has not publicly commented but reportedly warned against full occupation during a closed-door meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israeli broadcaster Kan 11 cited Zamir describing such an occupation as a potential “trap” during security discussions. Netanyahu is expected to convene his security cabinet on Thursday to finalise next steps in Gaza operations. Media sources anticipate expanded military operations across Gaza, including densely populated areas where hostages may be held. - AFP
KUALA LUMPUR : The Kelana Jaya Line signalling system upgrade for Phases 2 and 3, originally set for Aug 9, has been postponed to Sept 6. Prasarana Malaysia Berhad stated that the delay allows extra testing for the new Phase 1 system to ensure full functionality. Additional tests will evaluate system performance under real conditions to reduce future service disruptions. Phase 1 upgrades were conducted during night maintenance hours as they mainly involved depot areas, not the main train route. The project is part of a long-term solution following the November 2022 signalling system failure. Phase 2 works will occur on Sept 6, 7, 14, 15, 21, 27, 28, and Oct 11 and 12, affecting stations from KLCC to Gombak. Phase 3 is scheduled for Nov 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 29, and 30, covering Lembah Subang to Ampang Park. Affected stations will open at 9 am instead of the usual 6 am, while unaffected stations operate normally. Free shuttle buses and vans will be available to connect disrupted stations for smoother passenger movement. Station staff, auxiliary police, and Prasarana Troopers will assist passengers at affected and interchange stations. Information boards and leaflets will guide commuters at stations and bus stops. Prasarana apologised for inconvenience and thanked passengers for their patience and cooperation. The new SelTrac Generation 8 system offers real-time data analysis, better cybersecurity, and improved communication stability. The upgrade is expected to extend the current signalling system’s lifespan by up to 20 years. Latest updates on the rescheduling, affected stations, and alternative services can be found at [www.myrapid.com.my](http://www.myrapid.com.my) or Rapid KL’s social media. – Bernama

NEW DELHI : The Indian army intensified search operations on Wednesday for scores of people missing after deadly flash floods in the Himalayan region. Sniffer dogs, drones, and heavy earth-moving equipment were deployed to locate survivors in the devastated town of Dharali, Uttarakhand. At least four people were confirmed dead, while more than 50 remain unaccounted for after the disaster struck. Torrential monsoon rains continued to hinder rescue efforts, with communication lines severely damaged. Rescue teams managed to reach stranded individuals, reducing the number of missing from an initial estimate of 100. “The search for the missing is ongoing,“ said Mohsen Shahedi from the National Disaster Response Force. Videos showed a terrifying surge of muddy water destroying multi-storey buildings in the tourist-heavy region. Shahedi confirmed over 50 missing in Dharali, while 11 soldiers were unaccounted for in the nearby village of Harsil. Additional army units, including tracker dogs and drones, were mobilised to speed up rescue operations. Military helicopters delivered essential supplies and evacuated stranded residents, though bad weather complicated flights. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami attributed the disaster to an intense “cloudburst” and ordered rescue teams to work “on a war footing.” Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as floodwaters engulfed buildings within seconds. Suman Semwal recounted his father witnessing the flood with a “rumbling noise” before it struck Dharali. “The flood waters struck them in 15 seconds,“ Semwal told the Indian Express. Mud deposits up to 50 feet deep buried parts of the town, swallowing entire structures. Rescue teams worked manually and with machinery to clear debris and reopen blocked roads. Government weather agencies warned that all major rivers in Uttarakhand were flowing above danger levels. Residents were relocated to higher ground as water levels continued to rise. Experts linked the disaster to climate change, noting increasingly frequent extreme weather events. The UN’s World Meteorological Organization has warned of worsening floods and droughts due to climate disruptions. Hydrologist Manish Shrestha called the 270mm rainfall in 24 hours an “extreme event” with concentrated impacts in mountainous areas. “Such intense rainfall events are becoming increasingly common,“ Shrestha said. - AFP

BEIJING : China has prolonged its investigation into beef imports to assess potential harm to domestic producers, the commerce ministry confirmed. The probe, initially set for eight months, will now continue until November 2025 due to case complexity. Declining beef prices in China reflect oversupply and weaker demand amid economic slowdowns. Imports have risen sharply, making China a critical market for major beef-exporting nations like Brazil, Argentina, and Australia. The ministry cited a “significant adverse impact” on local producers from surging imports in recent years. Domestic industry representatives had requested the investigation, which began in December 2024. A ministry spokesperson noted the case involves extensive data review and stakeholder submissions. Exporting countries, farmers, and trade groups have actively participated by providing evidence. Officials are evaluating whether safeguards should be imposed to protect China’s beef industry. - AFP
