Angkasa to help retired military personnel form income-generating cooperatives

MELAKA : Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Berhad (Angkasa) is ready to assist government retirees, particularly retired armed forces personnel, in establishing cooperatives to create economic opportunities and boost their income. Its president Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Fattah Abdullah said support would cover training, education, financial advice and access to new market opportunities through domestic and international networks. He identified military services or facilities as potential business areas for former military personnel that the group has not yet ventured into. “Retired military personnel possess extensive expertise in the defence sector and have the potential to become suppliers of military assets and services, including the maintenance of military trucks, tanks and artillery,“ he told reporters. “Through these products and services, they can collaborate with the Defence Ministry and the government, which will benefit cooperative members.” Abdul Fattah said cooperatives provide retired military personnel with a platform to generate income as not all receive generous pensions to support their livelihood. He spoke after a presentation of essential items via the Projek Barang Asas initiative to members of the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association Tangga Batu Branch. Apart from the military sector, he said they can establish cooperatives in retail, modern agriculture, logistics, food production, community development, rural tourism and social entrepreneurship. According to the Malaysian Cooperative Statistics Report released last year, retirees were registered in 173 cooperatives with total membership of 19,065. These cooperatives recorded shares or fees amounting to RM11.2 million, with assets of RM60.84 million and revenue of RM12.99 million. – Bernama

MRA launches emergency relief mission for Cebu earthquake victims

KUALA LUMPUR : The Malaysian Relief Agency (MRA) has launched an emergency humanitarian mission to Cebu, Philippines following the devastating 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the region on October 6. An emergency relief team will deliver essential aid including food packs, hygiene kits, temporary shelters and other critical supplies under the Cebu Earthquake Emergency Relief 2025 mission. MRA president Dr Mohd Daud Sulaiman said the mission reflects Malaysian solidarity with the Philippine people and reassures affected communities they are not alone. “When disaster strikes, it reminds us that humanity transcends borders. The mission to Cebu is not just about aid, but also about hope,“ he said. The earthquake has claimed many lives, destroyed homes and severely damaged infrastructure, forcing thousands into temporary shelters with limited access to necessities. MRA will work closely with local humanitarian organisations and authorities in Cebu to ensure efficient, transparent and effective assistance delivery. The agency called on Malaysians to support the mission through donations to help affected families rebuild their lives. “Every ringgit donated is a symbol of love and solidarity, helping families who have lost their homes, safety and loved ones to rebuild their lives,“ the statement read.

– Bernama

Zakat and waqf are pillars of a just and enduring civilisation, says PM

Zakat and waqf are pillars of a just and enduring civilisation, says PM

KUCHING : Zakat and waqf are not merely instruments of charity but enduring civilisational strategies that have shaped and sustained communities for centuries, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He said zakat serves as a force that redistributes wealth, purifies the soul and binds society together, while waqf acts as an engine that multiplies impact and generates perpetual benefits. “Together, they are more than charity. They represent a vision for justice,” he said in his speech during the closing ceremony of the 14th World Zakat and Waqf Forum Annual Meeting and International Conference. The Prime Minister said these institutions can power education, strengthen healthcare, build climate resilience, provide housing, and drive digital transformation. He said they can ensure no child grows up uneducated, no family is left without shelter, and no society is abandoned to the margins. The text of his speech was read out by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar. Anwar said Islam has never been a mere spectator in history, but a driving force that once established hospitals, libraries, observatories and universities. He said these institutions were founded not from charity alone but from systematic, institutional responses to human needs. “At the heart of that flourishing were two engines - zakat and waqf. They ensured justice, redistributed wealth, funded knowledge, and upheld dignity for the vulnerable,” he said. The Prime Minister added that when these institutions thrived, civilisation soared, and when they declined, society faltered. “The lesson of history is clear. If we want to rise again, we must restore and renew these pillars,” he said. Meanwhile, Anwar urged Muslims to embrace science and technology and not fear them. He emphasised that tools such as artificial intelligence, digital media, fintech and blockchain can be harnessed for good. “But we must be guided by what I call our supreme AI - Al-Quran Intelligence. The Quran provides timeless principles of justice, compassion and accountability,” he said. Anwar stated that technology without values becomes dangerous, while technology guided by the Quran becomes transformative. He called for imagining waqf assets managed on blockchain for full transparency and zakat distributed through AI-driven platforms to maximise efficiency. The Prime Minister added that digital media should be used to inspire global solidarity, saying this vision is within reach if society is bold. – Bernama

Two Bangladeshi men found dead in Alor Gajah house, police suspect jealousy

Two Bangladeshi men found dead in Alor Gajah house, police suspect jealousy

ALOR GAJAH : Two Bangladeshi nationals were found dead inside a house in Durian Tunggal yesterday afternoon. Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the victims, aged 31 and 42, were construction workers who shared the house. Officers discovered the first victim in the kitchen with multiple stab wounds and covered in blood. The second victim, aged 31, was found hanged from a ceiling fan in a separate room. Police recovered two knives and a machete at the scene during their inspection around 7 pm. Dzulkhairi said initial investigations suggest the incident stemmed from jealousy between the two men over the 31-year-old’s Indonesian wife. The woman had previously lived with them but left the house with their three-month-old baby about two weeks earlier. Another Bangladeshi housemate in his thirties was at work during the incident and discovered the locked house upon returning. Neighbours reported hearing loud noises from the house before the discovery. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. Police urge anyone with information to contact the Alor Gajah district police headquarters or investigating officer ASP Norehan Omar at 06-5562222. – Bernama

- Bernama

Two women lose over RM400,000 in elaborate police impersonation phone scams

Two women lose over RM400,000 in elaborate police impersonation phone scams

DUNGUN : A teacher and a senior citizen collectively lost over RM400,000 in two separate phone scams involving suspects impersonating police and other officials. A 40-year-old female teacher in Dungun was cheated of RM254,360 after receiving a call on September 4 from a man posing as an insurance agent. The suspect accused her of making a false medical claim worth RM38,000 before transferring the call to an accomplice impersonating a police investigator. The second suspect alleged the victim was involved in money laundering activities, citing 30 bank accounts under her name used for fraudulent transactions. The call was then handed over to a third suspect pretending to be a deputy public prosecutor, who claimed to be delaying two arrest warrants issued against her. Dungun Police chief Superintendent Maizura Abdul Kadir said the victim was instructed to provide all her bank details for further action. The victim realised she was scammed when she discovered nine unauthorised transactions had transferred money from her account to unknown recipients between October 3 and 13. She lodged a police report yesterday regarding the incident. In a separate case, a 61-year-old woman in Kota Tinggi, Johor lost RM152,000 to a similar phone scam. Kota Tinggi District Police Chief Superintendent Yusof Othman said the victim received a call from someone claiming to be a delivery company representative. The caller informed her of a package containing illegal goods registered under her name before transferring the call to another suspect impersonating a police officer. The fake police officer accused her of involvement in money laundering and instructed her to make payments as part of the investigation. The victim made 10 fund transfers totalling RM152,000 to three different accounts between July 7 and 10. She was promised a refund once the investigation and trial concluded but realised she had been scammed when the money was never returned. Both cases are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. – Bernama

Man sentenced to death for murdering and burning pregnant girlfriend

Man sentenced to death for murdering and burning pregnant girlfriend

KLANG : A man was sentenced to death by hanging for murdering and burning his pregnant girlfriend in Sabak Bernam two years ago. Muhammad Fakrul Aiman Sajali, 22, maintained his guilty plea before Judge Norazlin Othman at the High Court here. He was charged with murdering 21-year-old Nur Anisah Abdul Wahab at Jalan Sungai Limau between 8.30pm on May 22 and 8am on May 23, 2023. The charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code carries either the death penalty or imprisonment between 30 and 40 years with at least 12 lashes. Judge Norazlin said the court accepted the accused’s unconditional guilty plea and acknowledgment of the prosecution’s evidence. She described the offence as cruel and premeditated, warranting a harsher sentence than spontaneous violence. “The victim was 18 weeks pregnant, meaning two lives were lost in this brutal attack,“ she said in her judgment. The autopsy revealed burns covering almost the entire body and horrific abdominal injuries exposing internal organs. “The accused struck the victim’s head with a stick, dragged her to a drain, then used a knife to stab her abdomen and slash her neck,“ the judge detailed. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Ashiqin Zulkifli submitted 112 exhibits including an ultrasound image, knife, stick and victim’s clothing. She called the offence extremely serious due to the loss of a pregnant woman’s life. “The victim’s death was too cruel and this premeditated crime should serve as a lesson to all,“ Nurul Ashiqin submitted. Defence lawyer Muhammad Nor Tamrin argued his client had been made a scapegoat, citing a DNA report showing the fetus did not belong to the accused. He said the accused faced pressure from a man claiming to be the victim’s cousin’s husband, who allegedly threatened him over the pregnancy. Muhammad Nor highlighted his client’s clean record and excellent academic performance with a 3.80 GPA. He urged the court to impose the minimum sentence considering the early guilty plea. – Bernama

ASEAN urged to become clean energy investment hub through partnerships

ASEAN urged to become clean energy investment hub through partnerships

KUALA LUMPUR : ASEAN should position itself as a prime destination for clean energy investment by leveraging public-private partnerships, green financing and climate funds, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. He emphasised that the region’s energy transition requires billions of dollars in investments across generation, transmission, innovation and human capital development. “ASEAN should aim to become a destination for clean energy investment,“ Fadillah stated at the Energy Foresight for ASEAN session during the ASEAN Energy Business Forum 2025. “This means creating stable policies, reducing risks, and showcasing success stories.” The Deputy Prime Minister, who also serves as Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, highlighted that accelerating the clean energy transition demands close collaboration between governments, businesses and financial institutions. He stressed that ASEAN must strengthen regional energy cooperation through initiatives like the ASEAN Power Grid and Trans-ASEAN Gas Pipeline. “By connecting our energy systems, we can share resources and accelerate the transition,“ Fadillah explained. “Multilateral trade and cross-border infrastructure will be essential in realising our dreams.” He revealed that ASEAN is renewing its commitment to the ASEAN Power Grid through an Enhanced Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement will enable closer cooperation in strengthening regulatory frameworks, harmonising standards and building trust among member states. Fadillah noted that energy ministers recognise strong governance as fundamental to the energy transition process. Consistent, coordinated policies supported by long-term planning, transparent targets and inclusive decision-making will drive greater collective action across the region. He concluded that effective financing mechanisms remain crucial for advancing all these energy transition initiatives. – Bernama
