Paratici back at Spurs as sporting director after ban

Paratici back at Spurs as sporting director after ban

TOTTENHAM on Wednesday announced the full-time return to the club of Fabio Paratici as part of a new leadership team. The Italian has been named as joint sporting director, with Dane Johan Lange, who previously held that position at Aston Villa, taking on the same role. Paratici had resigned from his position as managing director in April 2023 after a 30-month ban from football-related activity that he had received in Italy was extended worldwide following an investigation into allegations of false accounting at former club Juventus. He was given a suspended prison sentence of 18 months last month after a plea bargain deal. Under Italian law, plea bargaining does not involve a formal admission of guilt. Paratici had been working as a consultant for Spurs but will now resume a full-time position, while Lange steps up from his post as technical director. The club said in a statement: “Johan and Fabio’s combined expertise will ensure that every decision, from player pathways and performance development to scouting and recruitment, is aligned and supports one overarching goal -- to build a winning, world-class men’s team that endures.” Paratici said he was delighted to be back in a permanent role at the London club. “I am convinced that, working in partnership with Johan, we can build a special future for the club and our supporters,“ he said. - AFP

Madagascar coup leader to be sworn in as president after AU suspension

ANTANANARIVO/NAIROBI : Madagascar’s new military ruler Michael Randrianirina announced he would soon be sworn in as the country’s president. The African Union suspended Madagascar with immediate effect following the coup that ousted President Andry Rajoelina. Rajoelina condemned the takeover and refused to step down despite youth demonstrations demanding his resignation. Randrianirina stated the military had taken power and dissolved all institutions except the National Assembly. The army colonel confirmed his imminent inauguration during a press briefing on Wednesday. He declared the military had taken responsibility for governing the former French colony. Two sources close to him indicated he would be sworn in as president within the next day or two. A spokesperson for the African Union confirmed the bloc’s suspension of Madagascar. Suspension by the 55-member bloc carries significant political weight and could isolate the new leadership. African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf emphasised that the rule of law must prevail over force. Randrianirina announced a military-led committee would rule for up to two years alongside a transitional government. This military committee plans to organise new elections after the transitional period. Randrianirina previously commanded the elite CAPSAT army unit that helped bring Rajoelina to power in 2009. The same unit broke ranks with Rajoelina last week and urged soldiers not to fire on protesters. Rajoelina fled Madagascar on Sunday aboard a French military plane according to security sources. He claimed his life was at risk and is now believed to be in Dubai according to diplomatic sources. The 51-year-old former DJ rose to power in a 2009 coup backed by youth protests. He became the world’s youngest head of state at age 34 but failed to deliver on promised reforms. Madagascar has a population of about 30 million with three-quarters living in poverty. The country’s average age is less than 20 and GDP per capita plunged 45% between 1960 and 2020. The paramilitary gendarmerie and police have also broken ranks with Rajoelina alongside the CAPSAT unit. – Reuters

Bank of America sued for alleged financial ties to Jeffrey Epstein

Bank of America sued for alleged financial ties to Jeffrey Epstein

NEW YORK : A woman who says she was abused by the late financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein sued Bank of America on Wednesday, alleging the bank knowingly provided financial services that enabled his sex trafficking operation for years. Bank of America declined to comment. The woman, referred to in court papers as Jane Doe, is seeking an unspecified amount of damages. She is represented by law firms Boies Schiller and Edwards Henderson, who previously secured settlements of $75 million and $290 million with Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan, respectively, over their alleged financial ties to Epstein. Epstein died by suicide in 2019 in jail while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. The circumstances of his death, as well as his social relationships with wealthy and powerful individuals, fueled theories that others were involved in his crimes. His case has become a political headache for President Donald Trump’s administration. After pledging during the 2024 campaign to release files from the Justice Department’s investigation into Epstein, the administration reversed course this year, prompting an outcry from Trump’s conservative base and congressional Republicans. - Reuters

De Jong pens new Barca deal to 2029

De Jong pens new Barca deal to 2029

BARCELONA midfielder Frenkie de Jong signed a new deal until 2029, the Spanish champions announced Wednesday. The 28-year-old Dutch international joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 and is in his seventh season with the Catalan giants, winning two La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey twice. “Barca are confident that the midfielder can be a pivotal part of the current sporting project due to his quality and experience,“ said the club in a statement. De Jong has struggled for form at times but became a key part of the midfield under Hansi Flick last season alongside Pedri Gonzalez. “I always dreamed of playing for Barca, and now that I am living the dream I have always had since I was a child, I want to continue pursuing this dream for many more years, and I am eager to win titles,“ De Jong told a news conference. Arriving under previous Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu, De Jong is one of the club’s highest earners, with Spanish media reporting he has accepted a pay cut in his new deal starting from the 2026/27 season. De Jong said previous media reports over his salary were exaggerated and had affected how he was viewed by fans. “I will not tell you what I will earn, they’ve always talked about it a lot but I think that numbers regarding what I earned before have been exaggerated a lot,“ he explained. “I think that has affected a bit how people see me, because if they read in newspapers that Frenkie earns this, that he’s the player who earns the most money in Europe... it has an impact.” Barcelona tried to sell De Jong in 2022 as part of cost-cutting measures but the midfielder dug in to stay at the club for whom he has made over 250 appearances. “I don’t feel under-valued by my team-mates, coaches or within the club, that’s more (a media) thing,“ added De Jong. “That’s the beauty of football, everyone can have their opinion.” - AFP
