Lee Chong Wei to lead BAM Performance Committee, vows coach cooperation

NATIONAL badminton legend Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei has been appointed chairman of the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s Performance Committee. BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz announced the appointment alongside three other new council members. He stated that Chong Wei and the others were selected based on their expertise and vast experience in their respective fields. “We have appointed four new members of the BAM Council,” Tengku Zafrul told reporters after chairing the BAM Council meeting. He confirmed that these four individuals will chair various committees, with Chong Wei leading the Performance Committee. Tengku Zafrul added that BAM has streamlined its committees from 14 to 10 under the Tangkis 2030 strategic plan. He said nine committee chairmen have been appointed, all of whom are council members. External experts will also be invited based on their badminton experience, passion, and expertise. Tengku Zafrul confirmed he will not chair any committee himself. The BAM Council meeting formally adopted Tangkis 2030 as the official plan moving forward. He emphasised that Tangkis 2030 is a plan for Malaysia’s entire badminton community, not just BAM. “It is important to note that BAM can only play an effective role if it is in a strong financial position,” he stated. Expanding investment and commercial efforts will be BAM’s main focus to ensure the plan’s success. Chong Wei said his main priority is working closely with all coaches to improve national athletes’ performance. “I have to work hand in hand with the coaches to identify the athletes’ problems,” said the former world number one. He stressed the need to understand what happens during competitions when athletes sometimes win and sometimes lose. “I will work hard with the coaches to see how we can help the athletes perform better,” Chong Wei added. – Bernama

Deepavali symbolises Indian community unity and new hope in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR : This year’s Deepavali celebration symbolises the strength, unity and progress of the Indian community in Malaysia. Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Datuk Seri R. Ramanan stated that the festival’s spirit should reflect efforts to strengthen unity and empower the Indian community’s economy. “The light of Deepavali is not merely a religious symbol, but also represents strength, love and unity,“ he said in a statement. Ramanan expressed hope that this year’s Deepavali would be a beacon of “puthiya nambikei” or new hope for the Indian community. He reaffirmed the MADANI Government’s commitment to fulfilling and upholding the hopes of the Indian community. The ministry remains dedicated to supporting Indian entrepreneurs through various initiatives with substantial allocations. Programmes include the Indian Community Entrepreneur Development Programme and SPUMI Goes Big under TEKUN Nasional with RM100 million. Other initiatives comprise the Indian Women Entrepreneur Empowerment Programme by Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia with RM100 million funding. This excludes other ministry initiatives from Education, Housing and Local Government, and MITRA. Over 13,000 animals vaccinated in Malaysia to prevent rabies spread

Over 13,000 animals vaccinated in Malaysia to prevent rabies spread

KOTA BHARU : A total of 13,612 animals nationwide have been vaccinated throughout this year up to September in an ongoing effort to prevent the spread of rabies. Senior director of the Disease Control and Veterinary Biosecurity Division of the Department of Veterinary Services Dr Aida Muhid said this includes 5,965 in buffer zones such as those in Kelantan, Kedah, Perlis and northern Perak. Buffer zones play a crucial role because these states share borders with other countries which still report active rabies cases. Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Labuan remain free of rabies, but monitoring and vaccination efforts continue to be intensified to prevent transmission from high-risk areas. Dr Aida said Kelantan was chosen as the host for this year’s event due to its position as a frontline state. Public awareness in buffer zone areas is crucial to ensure the rabies virus does not cross Malaysia’s borders. Rabies now not only infects dogs but also cats and livestock such as goats, based on data from Sarawak showing that nearly 50% of positive cases came from animals other than dogs. This highlights the need for all pet owners to take responsibility by ensuring their animals are vaccinated and not allowed to roam freely without supervision. Between January and October this year, 46 rabies cases in animals were recorded in Sarawak, bringing the cumulative total since the outbreak was first detected in the state in 2017 to 1,161 cases. Dr Aida advised owners to keep their pet dogs within their home compounds and to use leashes and muzzles when taking them out to prevent bites or attacks on humans and other animals. If bitten, do not panic but wash the wound under running water and soap for 15 minutes, then seek immediate treatment at a health clinic. Rabies is entirely preventable through vaccination and prompt action after being bitten by a high-risk animal. – Bernama
