– Bernama

Malaysia keen to enhance semiconductor collaboration with India

Malaysia keen to enhance semiconductor collaboration with India

KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia and India hold significant potential for collaboration especially in the semiconductor sector which offers numerous opportunities for partnership. Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong said Malaysia wants to be part of India’s semiconductor story as both nations’ ecosystems are highly complementary. He believes this could potentially be an interesting addition and important part of trade relations between the two countries. “I believe there is great potential for India and Malaysia to collaborate, particularly in the semiconductor sector, where there are many areas for cooperation.” “Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia BN Reddy is working hard to establish a memorandum of cooperation on semiconductors,” he said during the recent India-ASEAN Strategic Dialogue forum. Liew emphasised that ASEAN needs to understand and comprehend large countries such as India, China, and the United States. He stressed the importance of engaging not only at the national level but also at the state level. “For instance, Gujarat has a population of more than 60 million, Uttar Pradesh has 241 million, while Malaysia’s population is 34 million.” “We are talking about a vastly different scale; the state level in India is huge.” “Thus, ASEAN needs to engage at all levels and create people-to-people interactions and relationships at both the national and provincial tiers.” “We must endeavour to understand India’s twenty-eight states and eight union territories,” he added. He also noted that ASEAN and India must truly develop a comprehensive relationship that can withstand the urge and the tendency to view the world through a bipolar arrangement. “The ASEAN and India relationship will grow, but I think we should specifically emphasise the areas such as building peace, human development, creating a strong middle class and growing technology together,” he said. – Bernama

This training also enhances national preparedness and cultivates a strong volunteer spirit among participants. PM Anwar warns against defence complacency during peace times

PM Anwar warns against defence complacency during peace times

JASIN : Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has warned that national peace should not breed complacency in defence preparedness. He stated that world history shows many nations made grave mistakes by neglecting military discipline during peaceful periods. “When a country is at peace and stable, people tend to assume everything is under control,“ he said at the MADANI Rakyat 2025 Programme closing ceremony. “The focus shifts solely to the economy, education and infrastructure development, assuming all is well.” Anwar emphasised that Malaysians must not neglect preparation, readiness and defence capability enhancement. He highlighted the RM21.7 billion allocation to the Defence Ministry under Budget 2026 for public transparency. “When we allocate RM21.7 billion to the Defence Ministry, some may ask: what equipment is being purchased? Which aircraft? Which tanks?” he noted. “These are matters that can be explained by the relevant officers to the public.” The Prime Minister appreciated Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin’s focus on discipline, procurement and armed forces personnel welfare. He stressed that national strength extends beyond military capability to effective law enforcement. “Just imagine, in two years, enforcement agencies have managed to recover national revenue, including from scams and illicit syndicates, amounting to RM15.5 billion,“ Anwar revealed. “This is the people’s money, the nation’s money.” He commended enforcement agencies including MACC, LHDN and PDRM for dismantling major syndicates and saving public funds. The recovered billions will be channelled back to the people through schools, clinics, infrastructure and civil servant salary adjustments. – Bernama

Thailand Cambodia border dispute joint declaration may be signed at ASEAN summit

BANGKOK : Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow confirmed that four-party consultations on the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute are progressing towards drafting a Joint Declaration on Thai-Cambodian relations. The consultations involving the United States, Malaysia, Thailand, and Cambodia took place on October 12 and 17 in Kuala Lumpur with the aim of restoring bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries. Sihasak stated that discussions focused on formulating implementation details for four priority areas and moving towards drafting the Joint Declaration. He added that these meetings followed the first round held in New York in September 2025. “Progress has been made in four areas that are a priority for Thailand, including the withdrawal of heavy weaponry from border areas, humanitarian demining, combating transnational crime, and the management of priority border areas,” he said. “If the discussions eventually lead to satisfactory outcomes, this Joint Declaration may be signed during the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur in the presence of Malaysia and the United States,” Sihasak stated in his official statement. He further mentioned that the Secretariats of the General Border Committee from both countries will meet on October 20 and 21 to discuss a detailed action plan for concrete implementation of agreements. According to the minister, the document must also undergo domestic procedures and receive endorsement from the defence ministers of both Thailand and Cambodia. Regarding the 18 prisoners of war, Sihasak clarified that Thailand needs to see concrete progress in implementing certain areas before considering their release. Tensions between the two neighbours over their 817-kilometre border dispute escalated into military confrontation in late July. The fighting abruptly halted following a ceasefire agreement brokered by Malaysia as ASEAN Chair in Putrajaya on July 28. – Bernama
