CANADA said on Monday it delivered humanitarian assistance through airdrops to Gaza, which has been under a devastating Israeli military assault for almost 22 months, with Ottawa again accusing Israel of violating international law. “The (Canadian Armed Forces) employed a CC-130J Hercules aircraft to conduct an airdrop of critical humanitarian aid in support of Global Affairs Canada into the Gaza Strip. The air drop consisted of 21,600 pounds of aid,“ the Canadian government said in a statement. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported that it was Canadian Armed Forces’ first humanitarian airdrop over Gaza using their own aircraft. The Israeli military said 120 food aid packages for Gaza’s residents were airdropped by six countries, including Canada. The other five were Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Germany and Belgium. Canada said last week it plans to recognize the State of Palestine at a meeting of the United Nations in September, ratcheting up pressure on Israel as starvation spreads in Gaza. Canada also said on Monday that Israeli restrictions have posed challenges for humanitarian agencies. “This obstruction of aid is a violation of international humanitarian law and must end immediately,“ Canada’s government said. The Israeli embassy in Ottawa had no immediate comment. Israel denies accusations of violating international law and blames Hamas for the suffering in Gaza. Israel cut off food supplies to Gaza in March and then lifted that blockade in May - but with restrictions that it said were needed to prevent aid from being diverted to militant groups. President Donald Trump also claimed Hamas militants were stealing food coming into Gaza and selling it. However, Reuters reported late last month that an internal U.S. government analysis found no evidence of systematic theft by Hamas of U.S.-funded humanitarian supplies. Israel says it is taking steps for more aid to reach Gaza’s population, including pausing fighting for part of the day in some areas, allowing airdrops and announcing protected routes for aid convoys. The latest bloodshed in the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict was triggered in October 2023 when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 and taking about 250 hostages, Israeli tallies show. Gaza’s health ministry says Israel’s subsequent military assault has killed over 60,000 Palestinians. It has also caused a hunger crisis, internally displaced Gaza’s entire population and prompted accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice and of war crimes at the International Criminal Court. Israel denies the accusations. - Reuters

NEW YORK : Sean “Diddy” Combs on Monday lost his bid to be released from jail ahead of his October 3 sentencing, after the hip-hop mogul was found not guilty at his sex crimes trial of the most serious charges he faced. Combs’ lawyers had asked U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian on July 29 to release Combs on a $50 million bond, arguing conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn were dangerous and that defendants convicted in the past of prostitution-related charges that were similar to Combs’ were usually released before their sentencing. Prosecutors with the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office countered in an August 1 court filing that staffing levels, medical services, and facility conditions at the MDC had improved since Combs was arrested in September 2024. They also said evidence of Combs’ physical violence presented at trial showed he was a danger to the community. In a written ruling on Monday, Subramanian said Combs’ arguments “might have traction in a case that didn’t involve evidence of violence, coercion or subjugation in connection with the acts of prostitution at issue, but the record here contains evidence of all three.” Combs’ lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment. - Reuters
At the next international EY Young Tax Professional of the Year (EY YTPY) Competition, Malaysia’s national winner from Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), Ooi Wei Xuen will represent the country. A graduate of the Bachelor of Business (Hons) Accounting and Finance at TAR UMT Penang, Ooi was crowned the national winner of EY YTPY 2025 Malaysia competition, after beating seven finalists. He is the fifth national champion from TAR UMT to represent Malaysia at the international stage of the competition. “My seniors’ achievements have greatly inspired me to prepare thoroughly and strive for the same level of excellence. Winning the award this year is incredibly rewarding, as I’m proud to contribute to TAR UMT’s legacy of success in this competition’s history. “For this, I am especially grateful to my lecturers Suzzanne Poh Shuh Chen, Goh Keat Siew and Michael Yeo Thiam Swee, for their unwavering support, trust and belief in me. “Their guidance, both psychologically and technical aspects, have been instrumental in shaping my confidence and performance throughout the competition,” said Wei Xuen. He shared, “My presentation in front of EY tax partners and the director from Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN) was intense, fulfilling and truly memorable. “It pushed me to rise to the occasion and gave me the rare chance to interact with top professionals in the field. Although being evaluated by such well-respected figures was nerve wrecking, it also boosted my confidence knowing my knowledge and skills are of industry standard. “After the competition, several EY professionals provided positive feedback on my performance and on some of the answers I gave during the Q&A session. One EY tax partner said it was surprising to hear such insightful responses from someone without any prior work experience. That truly humbled and encouraged me.” In addition to preparing for the international stage of the EY YTPY next year, Ooi is also preparing for the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) examination.
