KUALA LUMPUR: Airbnb activity contributed RM9.2 billion to Malaysia’s economy in 2024, making up five per cent of the tourism sector’s GDP, according to an Oxford Economics survey. The online platform supported four per cent of tourism-related employment, equating to one in every 26 jobs in the industry. Airbnb-linked economic activity helped sustain around 93,600 jobs and generated RM2.1 billion in wage income. Beyond tourism, Airbnb injected RM1.4 billion into manufacturing, RM1.2 billion into transport and storage, and RM1.2 billion into food and beverage services. Guest spending on accommodation and other expenses reached RM11 billion in 2024. Host earnings further boosted local economies through property maintenance, services, and personal spending. Domestic travel rebounded strongly, with Malaysians making up 67 per cent of Airbnb guests, exceeding pre-pandemic levels. International travellers accounted for 33 per cent of guests, more than double their 2022 share. Over 80 per cent of international guests came from the Asia-Pacific region, highlighting its importance as a key market. More than half of Airbnb guest spending occurred outside Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Non-urban areas contributed 62 per cent of Airbnb’s GDP impact and supported 63,500 jobs. Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb’s country head for Southeast Asia and India, said the platform helps distribute economic benefits nationwide. PETALING JAYA – Sistem pembayaran terbuka tol menggunakan teknologi pengecaman nombor plat automatik (ANPR) dijangka mula dilaksanakan secara rintis bermula Oktober ini, khususnya di laluan Hutan Kampung ke Sungai Dua di Lebuh Raya PLUS.Menteri Kerja Raya, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi berkata, sistem ANPR merupakan satu langkah strategik ke arah pelaksanaan sistem Aliran Pantas Pelbagai Lorong (MLFF) yang lebih cekap dan efisien, bagi mengelakkan kesesakan di semua jajaran Lebuh Raya PLUS."Saya sendiri telah melalui lorong tol menggunakan sistem ANPR ini tanpa henti, dan terbukti ia jauh lebih pantas."Pengguna juga tidak perlu berhenti atau memperlahankan kenderaan kerana plaza tol tidak akan ada palang lagi selepas ini," katanya pada sidang akhbar selepas meninjau pelaksanaan sistem itu di Ibu Pejabat PLUS di Persada PLUS, pada Khamis.Menurutnya, ANPR bukan sahaja menambah baik sistem sedia ada seperti RFID, malah dibangunkan sepenuhnya oleh pihak industri lebuh raya tanpa sebarang implikasi kewangan kepada kerajaan.Tambahnya, sistem ini turut disokong oleh platform digital bersepadu yang membolehkan pengguna mendaftar dalam talian menggunakan butiran diri, kenderaan serta kaedah pembayaran."Pengguna tidak perlu risau kerana tiada sebarang caj dikenakan untuk pendaftaran dan penggunaan sistem ini. Malah, ia membolehkan fleksibiliti penggunaan pelbagai mod pembayaran digital termasuk e-dompet, kad bank dan Touch 'n Go," katanya.Setakat ini, 13 plaza tol dan 35 lorong PLUS terlibat dalam fasa rintis sistem ANPR, dan penilaian menyeluruh dijangka dapat diselesaikan menjelang September atau Oktober.Alexander menjelaskan, teknologi ANPR menggunakan kamera beresolusi tinggi bagi mengenal pasti nombor plat kenderaan secara automatik, yang kemudiannya dipadankan dengan imej fizikal kenderaan menggunakan kecerdasan buatan (AI)."Kalau nombor plat ditukar, tetapi tidak sepadan dengan model atau fizikal kenderaan, sistem akan dapat mengesan percanggahan itu. Ia sangat tepat dan mempunyai ketepatan lebih 99.98 peratus," ujarnya.Tegasnya, nombor plat yang tidak mengikut spesifikasi atau rekaan fancy boleh menjejaskan keberkesanan sistem, dan pemilik kenderaan disaran menukar kepada nombor yang mematuhi undang-undang.Sementara itu, platform JustGo turut diperkenalkan bagi memudahkan pengguna mengakses pembayaran tol tanpa tunai secara digital. JustGo menyokong pelbagai kaedah pembayaran seperti e-dompet, kad debit, kad kredit dan Touch 'n Go.Tambahnya, MLFF dijangka dilaksanakan sepenuhnya dalam tempoh dua tahun akan datang, dengan ANPR sebagai asas teknikal kepada sistem tersebut."MLFF bermakna pengguna tidak lagi perlu melalui lorong khas atau palang. Ia akan menjadi aliran terbuka sepenuhnya menggunakan sistem pengesanan automatik," katanya.Katanya, ujian gantri MLFF di Lebuh Raya PLUS juga sedang dijalankan dan ia akan membantu semua pihak bersedia ke arah pelaksanaan sistem menyeluruh itu.Jelasnya, terdapat perbezaan antara ANPR dan MLFF, iaitu ANPR merupakan kaedah pengesanan, manakala MLFF ialah sistem kutipan tol secara menyeluruh tanpa lorong fizikal.Dalam pada itu, beliau memaklumkan bahawa kerja naik taraf persimpangan Juru seperti yang diumumkan Perdana Menteri akan dimulakan pada hujung tahun ini, dengan agensi pelaksana kini dalam persiapan rapi bagi memenuhi jangka masa yang ditetapkan.

PETALING JAYA : Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook (pic) has stated that luxury car owners who fail to renew their road tax and insurance will not be able to reclaim their vehicles if they are seized. He explained that under the Road Transport Act 1987, the Road Transport Department (RTD) has the authority to impound vehicles found without a valid road tax and insurance. Owners must settle all outstanding dues before they can reclaim their cars. “Just because they paid a RM300 compound, it doesn’t mean they can skip road tax. The vehicle will remain impounded until they settle the road tax and have valid insurance. Only then can it be released,” he said after launching the Foodpanda Malaysia’s rider safety programme today. Loke made these remarks in response to reports that some luxury car owners were exploiting low fines to avoid renewing their road tax and insurance. He noted that while the current maximum compound is RM300 under the Road Transport Act, the ministry is open to reviewing the law and increasing penalties, especially for repeat or high-risk offenders. “There are suggestions that in cases like this, we impose a higher fine. That is something we need to look at in the Act, because under the current law, we can only compound them up to RM300. But despite the limit, it doesn’t remove the requirement to have valid documents before the vehicle is released,” he said. On Monday, it was reported that over 1,000 luxury vehicles, including Ferraris and Lamborghinis owned by celebrities and business tycoons, were identified by the RTD as having expired road tax and insurance for an extended period. RTD senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said these vehicles are typically not used daily but are instead driven only on weekends or for special occasions. Kifli added that the RTD would take strict action if such vehicles are spotted on public roads. Kifli warned motorists that “Ops Luxury,“ which specifically targets such offenses, is ongoing. Last week, a Rolls-Royce Cullinan worth RM3 million, owned by a well-known local businessman, was among 53 luxury and exotic vehicles seized by the RTD. Other seized vehicles included a Lamborghini Huracan supercar and an Aston Martin DBX. All were impounded for being driven without valid road tax and insurance. These seizures were part of “Op Luxury 2.0,“ which ran from July 30 to August 1. In June, a local actress’s Porsche was among 101 luxury vehicles seized by the RTD during the first phase of the operation.

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 168,967 Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) users in Malaysia have outstanding balances as of June 30, 2025. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying disclosed this during a Dewan Rakyat session, stating the figure represents 2.6 per cent of the country’s 6.5 million BNPL users. The total BNPL loan balance stands at RM3.8 billion, accounting for 0.2 per cent of Malaysia’s household debt. Unpaid or overdue BNPL debt amounts to RM121.8 million, or 3.2 per cent of the total BNPL loan balance. Lim assured that the overdue debt remains manageable despite the figures. She was responding to Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (PN-Bachok), who inquired about BNPL debt risks and government mitigation efforts. A 2024 study by the Consumer Credit Oversight Board Task Force found BNPL users generally exhibit good financial discipline. The study involved 21,000 active BNPL account holders and revealed an 88 per cent on-time repayment rate. Another 12 per cent made late but full payments, while fewer than 0.5 per cent defaulted entirely. Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-Kota Melaka) raised concerns about consumer protection measures for BNPL users. Lim explained that the upcoming Consumer Credit Commission (CCC) will oversee credit providers under the Consumer Credit Act 2025. The CCC will adopt a risk-based supervisory approach similar to Bank Negara Malaysia and the Securities Commission. Its focus will include fair treatment, transparency, and fostering a responsible credit market. Licensing and conduct standards under the new law will empower the CCC to enforce regulations. Periodic inspections and ongoing monitoring will ensure compliance among credit providers. - Bernama

COURSES owned by President Donald Trump will be hosting events on both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf for the first time in the same year in 2026. LIV Golf has announced it will return to Trump National Golf Club Washington D.C. in Sterling, Va., next year. The Saudi Arabia-backed tour has had an event on a Trump-owned course every year since its inception in 2022. It last held an event at the Trump National Golf Club in 2023. The 2026 event, scheduled for May 8-10, will be one of 14 events on the tour. The PGA Tour, meanwhile, has scheduled an event at Trump National Doral, just outside Miami, according to Sports Business Journal. The tournament is expected to be played April 30-May 3, which slots in three weeks following the Masters and two weeks ahead of the PGA Championship. Per SBJ, the tournament could be a signature event that includes a $20 million purse. Both LIV Golf and the PGA Tour have a history of hosting events at Doral. LIV tournaments were played there for the first four years of its existence, 2022 to 2025, before the circuit didn't return to the Blue Monster this year.
