IMF chief warns countries lack AI regulatory and ethical foundations

WASHINGTON : Countries worldwide lack the necessary regulatory and ethical foundation to handle artificial intelligence’s rapid advancement according to IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva. Georgieva urged civil society groups to ring the alarm bells about AI risks during Monday’s annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. She stated the rapidly advancing technological revolution unleashed by AI is currently dominated by advanced economies. The United States holds the lion’s share of AI development and benefits according to the IMF managing director. This dominance is creating a growing gap between developed and developing nations she warned. Developing countries will find it extremely difficult to catch up with AI leaders Georgieva cautioned. The biggest shortfall lies specifically in regulation and ethics frameworks for artificial intelligence. Georgieva made these remarks during discussions with civil society organizations in Washington. Her comments highlight growing global concerns about AI governance and equitable access. Israeli hostage couple reunites after Hamas captivity in Gaza

Israeli hostage couple reunites after Hamas captivity in Gaza

JERUSALEM : Former Israeli hostage Noa Argamani was reunited on Monday with her newly freed boyfriend Avinatan Or. A government video showed Or first hugging and kissing his parents as his mother chanted the Jewish “shehecheyanu” blessing. Or was then led to a room where he found Argamani who was rescued from captivity by Israeli special forces in June 2024. The two embraced and kissed, apparently overwhelmed by the moment. Footage of Argamani being taken into Gaza on a motorcycle pleading for her life circulated globally after the October 7 attack. The two were seized from the Nova music festival that was a main focus of the Hamas attack in southern Israel. More than 360 people were killed at the site and another 40 were taken hostage. After her return, Argamani campaigned for the return of the other hostages. On Monday, Hamas handed over Or and 19 other surviving Israeli hostages as part of a ceasefire deal. The ceasefire was brokered by US President Donald Trump who arrived in Israel shortly before Or was freed. Israel released about 2,000 Palestinian detainees and prisoners in the exchange deal. – Reuters

Israel coach vows fresh start after Norway defeat ahead of Italy qualifier

Israel coach vows fresh start after Norway defeat ahead of Italy qualifier

ISRAEL coach Ran Ben Shimon declared his team ready for a new beginning in their crucial World Cup qualifier against Italy following a heavy defeat in Norway last week. Israel currently sits third in Group I with nine points while Norway leads with eighteen points and Italy holds second place with twelve points. A victory against Italy is essential for Israel to maintain their hopes of qualifying for next year’s World Cup tournament hosted across Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The group winners will qualify directly for the World Cup while the runners-up will advance to the playoffs. “Every game is a blank page,“ Ben Shimon told reporters during a press conference in Udine where Israel faces Gennaro Gattuso’s Italy on Tuesday. “We’ll do the best we can and hope the result is what we want,“ he added through an Italian translator. The coach emphasized that his team understands they are playing Italy and must perform at their best while sticking to their game plan. The match occurs after militant group Hamas freed the last living Israeli hostages from Gaza on Monday. Israel winger Manor Solomon said this development brought immense joy to the team. “Last night we struggled to sleep,“ Solomon revealed through an Italian translator. “We wanted to wake up to see what was happening,“ he added about the hostage situation. Authorities have implemented tight security measures in Udine to ensure the safety of the Israeli team and maintain public order. A pro-Palestinian march will proceed in the city center on match day despite the recently agreed ceasefire. Last week’s qualifier in Oslo featured protests and a security response that included tear gas deployment. Pro-Palestinian supporters gathered outside parliament before that match wearing Palestine national team jerseys. – Reuters

Cape Verde qualify for first World Cup with 3-0 win over Eswatini

Cape Verde qualify for first World Cup with 3-0 win over Eswatini

CAPE VERDE qualified for the World Cup for the first time by defeating Eswatini 3-0 in their final group match on Monday. The West African island nation overcame a nervous first-half performance to secure top spot in Group D ahead of Cameroon. Cape Verde finished their fairytale qualifying campaign with 23 points, four more than Cameroon who were held to a 0-0 draw by Angola. Dailon Livramento broke the deadlock by steering the ball home from close range just three minutes into the second half. Willy Semedo added a second goal with another tap-in just six minutes later to double the lead. Veteran defender Stopira, who came on as a late substitute, completed the scoring with a stoppage-time goal. The 37-year-old Stopira’s goal served as a fitting tribute to his long service with the national team since 2008. The island’s 600,000 inhabitants were given a day off to support their team but had little to cheer about in a tentative first half. Celebrations erupted across the archipelago after Livramento’s opening goal finally broke the deadlock. Cape Verde now join Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria and Ghana as the African representatives at next year’s finals in North America. They become the second smallest country ever to qualify for the World Cup after Iceland, who competed in 2018. Cameroon face the prospect of advancing to the playoffs for the four best runners-up across the nine African qualifying groups. The Indomitable Lions were jeered off the pitch in Yaounde after failing to beat Angola, whose 39-year-old goalkeeper Hugo Marques made several crucial saves. Tunisia completed their World Cup qualifying campaign without conceding a single goal after beating Namibia 3-0. The Carthage Eagles finished their Group H campaign unbeaten with nine wins from ten matches, scoring 22 goals. Ali El Abdi converted a first-half penalty in Tunis before Hannibal Mejbri and captain Ferjani Sassi added second-half strikes. Namibia finished second in the group despite suffering their third defeat in four qualifiers, but lack sufficient points to advance as one of the best runners-up. Liberia finished third in Group H after drawing 1-1 with Equatorial Guinea, who fielded a new-look team under a new coach. Sao Tome e Principe earned their first points of the campaign with a 1-0 victory over Malawi, ending an 18-match winless run. The tiny island nation, ranked 195th in the world, secured their historic win through a 62nd-minute penalty from Portuguese-based striker Ronald Lumungo. – Reuters

Venezuela closes embassies in Norway and Australia amid tensions

Venezuela closes embassies in Norway and Australia amid tensions

CARACAS/OSLO : Venezuela’s government announced on Monday it will close its embassies in Norway and Australia and open new ones in Burkina Faso and Zimbabwe as part of a foreign service restructuring. President Nicolas Maduro’s government described the closures as part of a strategic resource reallocation in an official statement. The statement added that consular services for Venezuelans in Norway and Australia would be provided by other diplomatic missions with details to follow. Norway’s foreign ministry confirmed it had received notice of the embassy closure in Oslo but was given no reason for the decision. Norway currently handles its affairs with Venezuela through its embassy in neighbouring Colombia’s capital. A Norwegian foreign ministry spokesperson expressed regret over the closure and affirmed Norway’s desire to maintain dialogue with Venezuela. The announcement came just days after the Nobel Committee in Oslo awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. Machado dedicated her prize for fighting for democracy to United States President Donald Trump. The Norwegian foreign ministry spokesperson clarified that the Nobel Prize is independent of the government and referred questions to the Nobel Committee. The Norwegian Nobel Committee did not immediately reply to a request for comment. The Venezuelan embassy in Oslo also did not respond to an email request for comment. Phone calls to the embassy’s listed numbers outside business hours went unanswered. Caracas described Burkina Faso and Zimbabwe as sister nations and strategic allies in the anti-colonial fight against hegemonic pressures. The new embassies will facilitate joint projects in agriculture, energy, education, mining and other areas of common interest. The embassy closures follow weeks of escalating tensions between Venezuela and the United States. Venezuela has called on the United Nations for support over deadly US military strikes on vessels off its Caribbean coast. Washington alleges the vessels were carrying drugs while some US allies on the UN Security Council have called for de-escalation. Venezuela has stated it reasonably expects an armed attack against the country in the short-term. Maduro has accused the United States of seeking a government change in Venezuela. Washington has not responded to this specific accusation but has called Maduro the illegitimate head of a narco-state. The United States has also announced a new counter-narcotics task force in its Southern Command overseeing Latin America. The governments of Zimbabwe and Burkina Faso are more aligned with Russia which has supported Venezuela at the United Nations. Russia has accused the United States of acting according to the cowboy principle of shoot first. – Reuters
