Florida raw milk linked to 21 E.coli infections, 6 kids affected

Florida raw milk linked to 21 E.coli infections, 6 kids affected

THE Florida Department of Health said on Monday that there have been 21 cases of Campylobacter and E. coli infections linked to drinking raw milk in the state, including six children under 10. The state health department reported seven hospitalizations linked to the consumption of raw milk containing disease-causing bacteria from a particular farm in Northeast/Central Florida. “Sanitation practices in this farm are of particular concern due to the number of cases,“ the health department said. The Shiga toxin-producing E. coli and Campylobacter infections can cause diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps. In severe cases, they can cause kidney failure, which is of particular concern for children, the health department said. In Florida, raw milk is sold only for non-human consumption as pet or animal food, which limits sanitary regulation efforts. Containers must be clearly labeled that the raw milk is for animal consumption only. Federal health officials have warned against consuming raw milk due to the bird flu outbreak in the United States. U.S. Health Secretary Kennedy has been a proponent of raw milk. - Reuters

McLaren faces dual challenge of success and potential disappointment in F1

McLaren faces dual challenge of success and potential disappointment in F1

MCLAREN boss Zak Brown is preparing to deal with disappointment at the end of the Formula One season, even as the team enjoy one of their most dominant years and a 200th grand prix win at the weekend. As the title battle between Oscar Piastri and teammate Lando Norris heats up, the McLaren pair separated by just nine points after Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix, the American conceded he was thinking also about how to handle the aftermath. Red Bull’s reigning champion Max Verstappen, the McLaren drivers’ closest rival, is now 97 points off the pace and told reporters at the weekend that he may not win again this year given his car’s issues. Even before the weekend, both Piastri and Norris cast caution aside and called it a two-horse race. One of them will surely end the year celebrating a dream come true. The other will rue what might have been, with a new engine era next season shaking everything up again and chances potentially disappearing. Losing always hurts, doubly so when it is to a teammate with the same car, and Brown said McLaren would have to deal with the situation sensitively when -- although he still insisted on saying if -- the time came. “Eventually... we’ll just sit down and actually have a conversation and go ‘right, one of you is going to win and it’s going to be the best day of your life. One of you is going to lose. How do you want us to handle that?’,“ he told a select group of reporters. “We’ll actually sit down and go ‘Right, you want us to jump up and down and celebrate? This guy won’. So we’re fully aware and sensitive to ‘how do you celebrate that situation?’.” Australian Piastri has won six races to Norris’s five but the Briton has momentum going into the August break, with three wins from his last four starts. The pair have had seven one-two finishes from 14 races, including the last four, and have left rivals trailing. McLaren are so far ahead in the constructors’ standings -- 299 points over Ferrari -- that the crown is a given. Much has been made of the potential for a falling out between friends, for clashes on track given what is at stake, but Brown was sanguine and said the relationship was only growing stronger. When Norris ran into the back of Piastri as he challenged for the lead in Canada in June, the Briton defused the situation by immediately taking responsibility. Piastri locked up behind Norris in Hungary on Sunday, in what could have been a repeat of that Montreal accident, but no contact was made. Brown said there was no ‘elephant in the room’ at McLaren, with the drivers having complete transparency on strategy and how the team go about racing, and he expected more close calls in future. “There’s competitiveness brewing... as the championship builds, I’m sure that tension will grow,“ said the boss. “We’re fully anticipating them ‘swapping paint’ again at some point, I’m very confident it won’t be deliberate, which is where you then get into the problems. “They will have racing incidents in their further time here at McLaren, we know that and they know that, so we’re not afraid of that. “I’m positive they’re never going to run each other off the track, and that’s where you get into bad blood. So they’re free to race... there are rules around our racing, which is respect your teammate, they know that.” - Reuters

Ukraine charges six in drone procurement corruption scheme

Ukraine charges six in drone procurement corruption scheme

KYIV : Ukraine said on Monday it had charged six people including a lawmaker and a government official for embezzling funds in the purchase of drones and jamming equipment for the military. Kyiv relies on a steady supply of drones and electronic warfare systems to fight Moscow’s invasion. It is also waging a crackdown on graft critical to its future in the European Union. Anti-corruption authorities said on Saturday they had uncovered a scheme offering kickbacks for purchases at inflated prices. It involved the legislator, one current and one now-sacked official, a National Guard commander and two businessmen. “In 2024–2025, an organised criminal group systematically misappropriated funds allocated by local authorities for defence needs,“ the National Anti-Corruption Bureau said in a statement. It said the bribes totalled around 30% of the contracts’ value. The drone contract was worth $240,000 with an inflation of about $80,000, the bureau said. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who sparked a public furore last month for briefly scrapping the independence of two anti-corruption agencies, praised the move on Saturday after meeting with the agency heads. In addition to the lawmaker, those charged on Monday include a former governor and regional administration chief, the head of a city military administration, the commander of a National Guard Unit, and the director and the owner of a drone manufacturer. The lawmaker was ordered into custody for two months on Monday, pending bail of the equivalent of around $190,000, Ukraine’s anti-corruption court said. Ukraine’s High Anti-Corruption Court later identified one of those charged as Serhiy Haidai, former head of the military administration in northeastern Luhansk region, now held by Russian forces, and later head of the regional administration in a city in western Ukraine. The court said Haidai was ordered held in custody for 60 days and offered the possibility of posting bail equivalent to $240,000. The others charged were not identified. The equipment was locally manufactured. - Reuters

Trump threatens higher tariffs on India over Russian oil purchases

Trump threatens higher tariffs on India over Russian oil purchases

WASHINGTON : Donald Trump said on Monday he will substantially raise tariffs on goods from India over its Russian oil purchases, while New Delhi said it would take measures to safeguard its interests and called its targeting by the U.S. president “unjustified.” Trump said last week Washington was still negotiating with India on trade after announcing the U.S. would impose a 25% tariff on goods imported from the country starting last Friday. India has faced pressure from the West, including the U.S., to distance itself from Moscow after Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022. New Delhi has resisted that pressure, citing its longstanding ties with Russia and economic needs. “India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine,“ Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA.” He did not elaborate on what the tariff would be. Over the weekend, two Indian government sources told Reuters that India will keep purchasing oil from Russia despite Trump’s threats. The sources did not wish to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter. Washington has cited geopolitical disagreements with India to explain why it has not yet been able to reach a trade deal with New Delhi. Other than India’s ties with Russia, Trump has cast the BRICS group of developing nations - of which India is a key part - as hostile to the U.S. Those nations have dismissed that accusation, saying the group promotes the interests of its members and of developing countries at large. A spokesperson for India’s foreign ministry said India will “take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security.” “In this background, the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable,“ the spokesperson added. India began importing oil from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict, the Indian statement said. The spokesperson said India’s imports were meant to ensure affordable energy costs for Indian consumers and were a “necessity compelled by global market situation.” The statement also noted the West’s, particularly the European Union’s, bilateral trade with Russia: “It is revealing that the very nations criticizing India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia.” India also has been frustrated by Trump repeatedly taking credit for an India-Pakistan ceasefire that he announced on social media on May 10. The ceasefire halted days of hostilities between the nuclear-armed Asian neighbors. India’s position has been that New Delhi and Islamabad must resolve their issues directly without outside involvement. Trump has reached a trade deal with Pakistan. - Reuters
