UK PM Starmer releases witness statements in China spy case

UK PM Starmer releases witness statements in China spy case

LONDON : British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has published a senior official’s evidence regarding the prosecution of two men charged with spying for China. This move aims to demonstrate that the case did not collapse due to government manipulation. The Crown Prosecution Service unexpectedly dropped charges last month against two British men who denied passing sensitive information to a Chinese intelligence agent. Prosecutors stated they needed evidence showing the UK considered China a national security threat but the government failed to provide it despite months of requests. The newly published documents detail Chinese malign activity but do not unequivocally state China poses a threat to UK national security. Starmer previously blamed the previous Conservative administration which was in power when the men were charged. Opposition parties accused the government of responsibility for the trial’s collapse to avoid jeopardising ties with China. Starmer published witness statements by Britain’s Deputy National Security Adviser Matthew Collins to address these claims. The prime minister stated these statements were made without involvement from ministers or political advisers. In a February document, Collins said China presents the biggest state-based threat to the UK’s economic security. An August statement detailed what he called the active espionage threat that China posed to the UK. The same document emphasised the UK government remains committed to pursuing a positive relationship with China. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch told parliament the situation stinks of a cover-up. Starmer’s office confirmed he learned the case might collapse days before it happened but intervention would have been inappropriate. A Conservative spokesperson responded that the published documents show the extent of China’s threat to the UK. They expressed shock that Starmer knew about the imminent trial collapse but did nothing to stop it. A December 2023 witness statement alleged one man passed information about who was briefing former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on China. – Reuters

KBS mulls mentor-mentee system under Rakan Muda to curb bullying

KUALA LUMPUR: The Youth and Sports Ministry is exploring the possibility of introducing a mentor-mentee system under the Rakan Muda programme to address bullying issues among students and youths. Its minister Hannah Yeoh said the initiative would involve experienced youth leaders and professional youth workers serving as mentors to guide young people. She stated the proposal was among key recommendations from the Youth Roundtable Discussion on ending bullying culture and building a caring generation. “One of the most interesting points raised by the NGOs was the importance of having a mentor-mentee system involving older youths and professional youth workers,” she told reporters after chairing the session. Hannah confirmed this proposal has been recommended for immediate implementation. She emphasised that volunteers involved in the mentor-mentee system must undergo training to ensure they can play their roles effectively. “It could be risky if untrained mentors give unprofessional or inaccurate advice,” she added. The proposed system aligns with the government’s commitment under Budget 2026, which allocated 5 million ringgit to the ministry for the Lawan Buli initiative. All recommendations from the roundtable will be compiled and presented to the Cabinet within three weeks as part of a policy brief. She noted the proposals could serve as a reference for the Education Ministry and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said in their anti-bullying efforts. Hannah emphasised that combating bullying requires a holistic approach beyond legal or disciplinary action. This approach includes values education, awareness campaigns and community engagement. The ministry will continue creating safe and inclusive spaces for youth through its agencies IYRES and JBSN. – Bernama

Brown University rejects Trump administration academic compact

Brown University rejects Trump administration academic compact

PROVIDENCE : Brown University President Christina Paxson has refused to sign the Ivy League school onto a Trump administration memo. Paxson said accepting the memo’s terms would restrict academic freedom and undermine Brown’s governance autonomy. She stated the compact directly violates an agreement Brown signed with the administration in July. MIT became the first of nine elite universities to decline signing the compact last week. President Donald Trump has sought to eradicate what he labels as left-wing extremist thought from US universities. The administration asked the nine elite colleges to cap international undergraduate enrollment at 15%. It also demanded bans on using race or sex in hiring and admissions and defining genders based on biology. Schools pursuing values beyond the memo’s outline could forgo federal benefits. Institutions complying with the compact could be rewarded with preferential funding consideration. The administration has canceled federal contracts worth millions with numerous schools. Courts have ordered many of the federal funding cuts to be restored. Brown signed a July agreement to pay 50 million dollars over a decade for workforce development. This agreement restored the university’s federal funding for medical and health sciences. Paxson wrote that the July agreement affirms the government cannot dictate curriculum or academic speech. White House spokeswoman Liz Huston said Trump is committed to restoring academic excellence. She stated any university joining this effort would help shape America’s future positively. Trump wrote on social media about cracking down on schools illegally discriminating based on race or sex. He invited all institutions to enter into agreements for a golden age of academic excellence. The White House confirmed it only reached out to nine elite universities regarding such agreements. – Reuters
