PM Anwar urges faster construction of Kota MADANI project

PUTRAJAYA : Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for the swift implementation of the Kota MADANI project, envisioned as a model for urban development rooted in humanitarian values, sustainability, and technological progress. The Finance Minister said he had proposed to Putrajaya Holdings (PjH) to expedite the project, which was launched on June 26. “I proposed the development of Kota MADANI more than a year ago, and I would like to thank Perbadanan Putrajaya (PPj) for its full cooperation in expediting the approval process. “With PPj and all government agencies providing their full support, it is now up to Putrajaya Holdings to push ahead at full speed,” he said in his speech at Putrajaya Holdings’ 30th anniversary celebration here on Friday (October 17). Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and PjH chairman Datuk Kamil Khalid Ariff. The Kota MADANI development project in Precinct 19 here is a major initiative based on the concept of a smart, people-oriented and environmentally sustainable city. Valued at RM4 billion, the project is being developed by PjH through a public-private partnership model based on the build, lease, maintain and transfer (BLMT) concept, without requiring government funding at the initial stage. Meanwhile, Anwar said Putrajaya, known as the federal administrative centre, has received praise from foreign leaders for its beauty and distinctive identity. “From the prime minister’s official residence, one can see the breathtaking view of Putrajaya — it is truly impressive,” he said. He also expressed his appreciation to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his role in initiating and driving the development of Putrajaya. “There was some hesitation among civil servants in the early days, as many were reluctant to relocate from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya. “But after seeing the facilities — the mosques, schools, infrastructure, hospitals and other amenities — they became more eager to move,” he said. He said private sector involvement in the construction of a private hospital in Putrajaya would further elevate its status on the international stage. “The establishment of a private hospital will not only enhance healthcare services but also reflect excellence and high standards,” he said. Anwar also emphasised that urban development should embody human-centred, sustainable and green values, guided by the principles of a smart city. - Bernama

Free screening for school pupils on World Sight Day

IPOH : In conjunction with World Sight Day, a total of 120 pupils of SJK (T) Kg Simee had their eyes screened for any defects at the school hall on Oct 9. The programme was organised by Persatuan Kebajikan Amal Makmur Negeri Perak with the cooperation of the Perak State Education Department. Professional staff of Vista Eye Specialist Centre were on hand to conduct the screenings. The advisor of Eye Screening Programme for Students in Perak, Datuk Dr Jasvinder Singh, an opthalmologist, stressed on the need for screening to detect any problems. He said students are not aware that they have sight defects, contributing to their poor academic results,. “They are intelligent but due to poor eyesight these students fail to excel. “Then there are gadgets like iPads and handphones which cause these youngsters to suffer from problems of far-sightedness,” he added. Jasvinder said the event was aimed at promoting awareness on eye health among schoolchildren, highlighting the importance of regular vision screening and preventive eye care in line with this year’s theme for World Sight Day, which is “Love Your Eyes at Work and School”. “It was a meaningful collaboration between the education, health and community welfare sectors, working together to safeguard the vision and future of our young generation,” he said. K. Nachemuthu, the project manager for the programme, said pupils who are screened would be referred to the hospital depending on the results of their tests. Meanwhile, the department’s principal assistant director for special education, Ahmad Maswan Ahmad Fuaad, who represented the State Education Department director at the event, said students are often labelled as “lazy” or “not focussed”. “This is not the case as their problem is due to poor eyesight and as such they cannot concentrate on their studies,” he said. Ahmad Maswan praised the association for organising the programme and hoped that more schools would be included in the future. Since 2022, some 20,000 students from 100 schools across Perak have been screened under the programme.

1,500 pupils continue lessons via PdPR after storm damages school

1,500 pupils continue lessons via PdPR after storm damages school

KUALA LANGAT : All 1,500 pupils of Sekolah Rendah Agama Kampung Medan in Telok Panglima Garang have continued their studies through the home-based teaching and learning method. This follows severe damage to the school building caused by a storm on Wednesday. Selangor Islamic Affairs and Innovation Committee chairman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said the measure was implemented to ensure the safety of the school community. It also facilitates cleaning and repair work on the damaged school building. He confirmed that the Selangor Islamic Religious Department granted a two-week leave to students following the recent storm. However, 200 Year Five students are expected to attend school next Thursday. They are scheduled to sit for the Quran and Fardhu Ain Class Assessment Test. Mohammad Fahmi assured that suitable classes will be arranged to accommodate this examination. He visited the school today accompanied by the school management and JAIS officers. They spent nearly an hour assessing the damage and collecting information for follow-up assistance. Mohammad Fahmi noted that the surau within the school compound requires a complete rebuild. The front classrooms have sustained significant roof damage. The wiring should ideally be replaced along with the furniture to prevent any untoward incidents. The other two blocks sustained only ceiling damage. The Public Works Department will carry out a thorough inspection of the wiring system. This is necessary due to the risk of electric shocks or water leaks during rainfall. Mohammad Fahmi said JAIS has also provided 18,000 ringgit in aid through the Selangor Muslim Charity Fund. This financial support goes to the Parent-Teacher Association of SRA Kampung Medan. It will support affected students and the school’s development efforts. Halal International Selangor contributed 1,300 ringgit to each of the 13 pupils who were injured in the incident. In the 4.15 pm incident, six schools, a hall, and more than 40 houses were reportedly damaged. – Bernama
