PUTRAJAYA : The Federal Court has reserved judgment on a review application by three prisoners seeking to set aside their whipping sentences. A three-member panel chaired by Chief Justice Datuk Seri Utama Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh said the decision would be delivered at a later date. The applicants contended that whipping violates Articles 5 and 8 of the Federal Constitution, citing potential risk of death. They referenced a previous case where an inmate died after being whipped. All three men had their death sentences commuted to 30 years’ imprisonment and whipping under Act 847. Mohd Helmi Anuar Mohd Kassim and Kumanaan Anthony Vincent each received 24 strokes of the cane. J. Sivachandran, convicted of murder, was sentenced to 12 strokes in addition to 30 years in prison. Lawyer N. Surendran argued the punishment violates Article 5(1), which guarantees the right to life. He claimed information about a former inmate’s death emerged after their cases were reviewed under Act 847. Deputy Public Prosecutor Afzainizam Abdul Aziz defended the sentence as lawful and within current legislation. He emphasised strict medical safeguards prevent excessive harm during whipping. The procedure is conducted under constant medical supervision and halted if a prisoner is deemed unfit. Malaysian Bar counsel M.M. Athimulan argued whipping breaches Article 8(2) guaranteeing equality. He noted only men are subject to caning while women are exempt. – Bernama

TANJONG MALIM : The Royal Malaysia Police has promised a transparent and professional investigation into recent criminal incidents at school premises. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stressed that those involved would be brought to justice in accordance with the law. He said public confidence, especially among parents, needed to be strengthened in line with the slogan “there is no separation between the police and the community.” “In the aspect of school safety, the people have the right to focus on because their children are sent to school,“ he said. “The problem is that we must strengthen the confidence of the people, the community including parents if it is related to a crime incident at school, then we will bring the perpetrator to justice using existing laws.” Saifuddin Nasution said investigations would use both the child-related act and relevant Penal Code sections such as 302, 375 or 377B. He stressed that police would not compromise on any crime incident at school regardless of the perpetrator’s identity. However, he noted that this role cannot be placed solely on the shoulders of the police. “It has to involve the school, it has to involve the community leaders, opinion leaders, because we want to encourage everyone’s cooperation in this aspect of security,“ he said. In yesterday’s incident, a Form 4 female student died, believed to have been stabbed by a Form 2 male student at a secondary school in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya. Last week, in an incident at a school in Alor Gajah, Melaka, a Form 3 female student was believed to have been raped by several senior students. – Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia is prepared to deploy a Malaysian Armed Forces battalion to Gaza if selected by the United Nations for peacekeeping duties. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin confirmed a battalion has already been registered for this purpose. “We expressed our readiness and intention to be there to help,“ he told reporters after launching the PERHEBAT Transformation Plan 2026-2035. Malaysia now awaits the UN Security Council’s decision regarding peacekeeping force deployment to the conflict-torn territory. “If Malaysia is selected to send a force, we are ready with one battalion,“ Mohamed Khaled stated. He clarified that the Gaza mission battalion would be separate from Malaysia’s current contingent serving in Lebanon. “That is rotated every year — we recall one group and send another,“ he explained. “So we have other battalions on standby.” The minister emphasised that deployment costs are not currently a priority consideration. “If we truly want to help, we don’t need to talk about cost first,“ Mohamed Khaled said. He reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to global peace efforts and universal humanitarian principles. The country remains steadfast in upholding these principles as the foundation of its support for the Palestinian cause. – Bernama
ROME : The UN’s World Food Programme has warned that staggering funding cuts risk pushing up to 13.7 million current food aid recipients into emergency hunger levels. This emergency level is just one step before a full-scale famine classification. Six key operations in Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan are currently facing major disruptions. These disruptions are projected to worsen significantly by the end of the year. The Rome-based agency reported a staggering 40% reduction in its funding for 2025. Projected funding of $6.4 billion compares to $9.8 billion received in 2024. The humanitarian system is under severe strain as partners withdraw from frontline locations. This withdrawal creates a dangerous vacuum in essential aid delivery. The report highlighted a Lancet medical journal analysis about the huge impact of US assistance cuts. Former US President Donald Trump slashed foreign aid upon his return to office in January. These cuts have dealt a heavy blow to humanitarian operations across the globe. Programme coverage has been severely reduced and food rations have been cut. Life-saving assistance to households in Catastrophe, or IPC Phase 5, is now at serious risk. Preparedness for future shocks has also dropped drastically due to funding shortages. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification is a UN-backed initiative measuring global hunger. WFP estimates its funding shortfalls could push 10.5 to 13.7 million people into Emergency Phase 4. These individuals are currently experiencing Crisis, or IPC Phase 3, levels of acute food insecurity. WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain stated the world faces hunger on an unprecedented scale. She said the funds needed to respond are woefully insufficient for the current crisis. McCain added that they are watching the lifeline for millions of people disintegrate. Just 600,000 people will receive WFP food aid this month in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This figure is dramatically down from a planned 2.3 million recipients. Less than 10% of those in need are getting assistance in Afghanistan despite soaring malnutrition. Expensive airdrops in famine-risk areas of South Sudan are under threat from funding constraints. Families in Haiti are now receiving only half of the agency’s standard monthly food rations. Global hunger has reached record levels with 319 million people facing acute food insecurity. This total includes 44 million people already at emergency levels of hunger. The UN formally declared a famine in Gaza earlier this year. The number of people in famine or on the brink has doubled in just two years to 1.4 million. This catastrophic situation spans across five different countries. Rising hunger levels not only put lives at immediate risk but also undermine regional stability. They fuel the displacement of communities from their homes and homelands. McCain warned that decades of progress in the fight against hunger are now at risk of being lost. – AFP

MELAKA : Police have dismantled a telecommunications cable theft syndicate with the arrest of 13 individuals during a raid in the Merlimau Industrial Area. Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the suspects, all locals aged between 21 and 47, were detained at approximately 6 am on Monday. He stated they were caught red-handed cutting cables from a manhole while wearing reflective vests similar to those used by telecommunications company workers. “During the inspection, the suspects failed to produce any documents or work orders from the telecommunications company,” Dzulkhairi said at a press conference at the Jasin district police headquarters. Initial investigations revealed all suspects were acting under the instructions of a man believed to be the mastermind who remains at large. The syndicate was believed to have been active for the past two to three months across multiple states. Each individual involved was paid according to their respective roles with total losses estimated at RM60,000. Five suspects tested positive for methamphetamine, with four having prior criminal and drug records. Police seized several items including an excavator rented for approximately RM500 per day, four cars, a four-wheel-drive vehicle and 167 cables. Also confiscated were seven reflective safety vests, two hard hats, a water suction machine, an electric generator, a chainsaw and five fake worker identification cards. All suspects have been remanded for four days to assist investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code. – Bernama
