Indicted New York AG James defies Trump at mayoral rally

NEW YORK : Indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James defiantly endorsed mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani at a rally on Monday. James, who recently faced criminal charges from Donald Trump’s justice department, made her first public comments since the indictment. “I know what it feels like to be attacked for just doing your job,“ she told a cheering crowd in Manhattan’s Washington Heights district. She vowed to continue fighting against what she described as aggressive policies from Washington. “I will keep fighting the aggressive policies of Washington, DC, and I will not stop, I won’t give up, and I won’t give in.” James added a powerful declaration with her statement “I fear no man,“ seen as a direct challenge to the president. The 66-year-old Democrat was indicted on charges of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution. She previously oversaw the fraud case against Trump that resulted in a $454 million civil penalty before it was overturned on appeal. Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic socialist, praised James for standing up to what he called an authoritarian administration. “His authoritarian administration is waging a scorched earth campaign of retribution against any who dared oppose (him),“ Mamdani stated. Recent Quinnipiac University polls show Mamdani leading former governor Andrew Cuomo by 13 points in the mayoral race. The New York City mayoral election is scheduled for November 4 with incumbent Eric Adams having withdrawn from the contest. James faces allegations concerning false statements made to obtain favorable loan terms for a Virginia property purchase. A coalition of 22 attorneys general condemned the prosecution as retaliatory and characteristic of authoritarian regimes. “These kinds of prosecutorial abuses are the hallmarks of police states and authoritarian regimes -- not America’s democracy,“ their joint statement read. The indictment came shortly after former FBI director James Comey also pleaded not guilty to separate charges. – AFP

Anwar warns Gaza ceasefire must not be just another pause between wars

Anwar warns Gaza ceasefire must not be just another pause between wars

KUALA LUMPUR : Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has cautioned that the latest Gaza ceasefire efforts must not become merely another pause between wars. Speaking at the Kuala Lumpur Conference on a New Just and Humane International Order, Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s support for the 20-point peace initiative proposed by American President Donald Trump. However, he noted there is still no comprehensive peace plan, no assurance of the Palestinians’ right of return and no categorical commitment to establishing an independent Palestinian state. “Malaysia has spoken up for peace wherever we can,“ Anwar said in his keynote address titled ‘Galvanising the South in Shaping a New International Order’. “Now, with the latest fragile ceasefire in place in Sharm El Sheikh, we are monitoring developments by the minute.” The Prime Minister said Malaysia, alongside South Africa, Bolivia and Brazil, fully supports the ceasefire but emphasised it must lead to rebuilding Gaza, restoring dignity and recognising the Palestinian right to live freely in their own land. Anwar also criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, saying it had shown no intention of honouring peace commitments. He warned that the world must not allow Gaza to become another cycle of destruction and despair, stressing that leadership must turn moral outrage into sustained action. “Morality and power are never easily reconciled, yet they must coexist if order is to endure,“ Anwar stated. “Without moral anger, there can be no justice. But leadership must ensure that moral conviction becomes policy, and compassion turns into action that endures.” The Prime Minister stated that the unfolding tragedy and Zionist atrocities in Gaza reflect a deeper global crisis, adding that silence is no longer an option for Malaysia. Apart from the RM100 million in humanitarian aid already committed for Gaza, Malaysia is also working jointly with Japan, as well as other East Asian and Middle Eastern partners, to mobilise additional support for the Palestinian people. – Bernama

Lima mayor resigns to run for president amid Peru political crisis

Lima mayor resigns to run for president amid Peru political crisis

LIMA : The ultra-conservative mayor of Peru’s capital resigned on Monday and announced his presidential candidacy for the Andean nation. Rafael Lopez Aliaga is currently the favourite in opinion polls concerning Peru’s next leader. He announced his bid just three days after Peru’s Congress impeached deeply unpopular former president Dina Boluarte. The 38-year-old head of Peru’s legislature, Jose Jeri, was sworn in to lead the nation until elections in April 2026. This marks the second time Lopez Aliaga, aged 64, has run for president following his 2021 attempt. “I announce my resignation from the position of mayor of the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima to run in the primaries of the Popular Renewal party,“ Lopez Aliaga stated in a letter read before the city council. A member of the traditionalist Catholic group Opus Dei, he has embraced the nickname “Porky” as a political symbol. In June, when a supporter gave him a piglet in a cape during a road project visit, he nicknamed it “Worky” to highlight his “love of work.” Peru’s media is calling his second presidential run “Porky’s revenge.” The country is experiencing a deep security crisis with extortion and contract killings becoming daily features. Lopez Aliaga, an admirer of Donald Trump and El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele, calls for military tribunals to try the worst criminals he labels “urban terrorists.” – AFP
