Oman’s giant sinkholes attract tourists with mystery and myths

OMAN : Shrouded in fog in the lush mountains of southern Oman, a giant chasm plunges into the landscape, echoing with mysterious sounds that have spawned myths and legends among nearby tribes. This enormous sinkhole is one of four that dot Dhofar governorate, including one of the world’s biggest: the yawning Kahf Teiq, up to 211 metres deep and 150 metres wide. At the Tawi Atair sinkhole, tourists potter around on concrete paths and stairways. Not all of the holes are so welcoming, however. The sheer drop of the Sheeheet pit, a 40-minute drive away along mountain roads, is ringed with slippery mud, prompting the authorities to put up a fence and warning signs. During AFP’s visit, one tourist slipped and slid perilously close to the edge. Dhofar’s governor, Marwan bin Turki Al-Said, gave assurances that safety was a priority at the sinkholes, in a briefing attended by AFP. Tawi Atair means “Well of Birds” in Dhofar’s regional language, a reference to the avian twittering, distorted by echoes, that reverberates off the rock. It lay unknown to the outside world until 1997, when a team of Slovenian researchers working with Oman’s Sultan Qaboos University brought it to international attention. Now the sinkholes are marketed as a tourist attraction in Dhofar, whose temperate climate draws many visitors from the Gulf during its punishing summers. Dhofar folklore has it that the sinkholes were created by meteorite strikes, direct hits from outer space that gouged the colossal craters. But Ali Faraj Al-Kathiri, a geologist based in Dhofar, explains that water seeping into the porous limestone forms an acid that dissolves it, creating the caverns over a period of thousands of years. The Oman sinkholes are not to be confused with the “Well of Hell”, the foul-smelling, pitch-black Barhout pit across the border in eastern Yemen that is reputed as a prison for demons. – AFP

Malaysia’s US tariff negotiations safeguard fiscal sovereignty, says Tengku Zafrul

KUALA LUMPUR : Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has clarified that Malaysia’s investment commitments in tariff negotiations with the US are commercial deals by private firms and GLCs. He stressed that these commitments do not involve public funds or increase the country’s fiscal burden. The phased implementation over five to ten years ensures no sudden financial outflow, he explained in the Dewan Rakyat. Responding to Lim Guan Eng (Bagan–PH), Tengku Zafrul detailed the measures securing a reduced countervailing tariff rate of 19 per cent from 25 per cent. The negotiations, backed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and MITI, upheld national policies like Bumiputera equity and halal standards. Malaysia’s strategic approach balanced trade deficits while protecting key sectors like automotive and critical minerals. Commitments include US$150 billion in semiconductor, aerospace, and data centre investments, plus US$19 billion for Boeing aircraft purchases by Malaysia Aviation Group. Annual commitments average 8.0 per cent of GDP or 13.5 per cent of private expenditure, aligning with corporate operating costs. Tariff concessions cover 98.4 per cent of US exports, with 60.4 per cent at zero duty and reductions capped at 15 per cent. Non-tariff adjustments include halal certification and eased US meat and dairy exports, alongside labour and environmental compliance. - Bernama

India to issue gun licences in Bangladesh border areas amid tensions

India to issue gun licences in Bangladesh border areas amid tensions

NEW DELHI : India’s Assam state will issue gun licences to “indigenous” residents near the Bangladesh border, its Hindu nationalist leader announced. The move has raised concerns among Assam’s Muslim population, who make up roughly 35 percent of the state’s 31 million people. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed Assamese-speaking communities face threats from Bangladesh and within their own villages. A new website will allow indigenous residents in “sensitive areas” to apply for arms licences, Sarma said on Wednesday. India maintains strict gun control laws, making the decision highly controversial. Opposition leaders condemned the move, warning it could fuel gang violence and personal vendettas. “This is not governance, this is a dangerous step backwards towards lawlessness,“ said Congress lawmaker Gaurav Gogoi on social media. Sarma belongs to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The policy aligns with the BJP’s broader campaign supporting Assamese-speaking communities. Large-scale evictions targeting “illegal foreigners or doubtful citizens” have been a key part of this agenda. Critics argue the measures disproportionately affect Bengali-speaking Muslims, many of whom are Indian citizens. Assam was the first state to implement a contentious citizenship verification exercise in 2019, excluding nearly two million people. Tensions have risen since Bangladesh’s autocratic government, a BJP ally, was overthrown last year. Sarma warned that “indigenous people” in border districts feel insecure due to recent developments in Bangladesh. – AFP
