Tropical storm kills family of five in Philippines, forces evacuations

MANILA : Tropical Storm Fengshen killed a family of five on the Philippines’ main island of Luzon before heading out to sea on Sunday. The victims, including children aged two and 11, were crushed to death in their sleep when a giant palm tree fell on their house near Pitogo, approximately 153 kilometres southeast of Manila. “The entire family was asleep in a house made of light materials,“ Quezon province Governor Angelina Tan told Manila radio station DZMM, noting that a sixth family member survived. Pitogo police official Sonny Ombajino confirmed the deaths occurred as the storm raked across southern Luzon overnight. At least 47,000 people sought refuge in government-designated temporary shelters across southeast Luzon starting Saturday, according to local disaster officials. The weather service had warned of possible coastal flooding and landslides as rain continued to batter the island. Fengshen was expected to track northwest toward Vietnam with gusts reaching 90 kilometres per hour, according to meteorological forecasts. The Philippines experiences approximately 20 storms and typhoons annually, frequently affecting areas where millions live in poverty. This disaster follows Typhoon Bualoi, which killed 37 people and displaced 400,000 in the northern Philippines. Scientists warn that tropical storms are growing more powerful due to human-driven climate change. Fengshen struck as the country recovered from a series of major earthquakes that killed at least 87 people over the past three weeks. – AFP

Crocodile found in Australian luxury hotel pool, guests unfazed

PORT DOUGLAS : A crocodile was discovered swimming in a luxury hotel pool in northeastern Australia over the weekend. The juvenile predator was filmed lying at the bottom of the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort pool in Port Douglas. TikTok user Lisa Keller posted footage showing the reptile with several guests relaxing on sun lounges nearby. “Not a single person cares,“ Keller remarked in her video. Hotel manager Joseph Amerio confirmed the crocodile was spotted early Saturday morning. The pool was immediately cordoned off until Queensland wildlife officers arrived. “At no time were guests and the baby animal in the pool at the same time,“ Amerio told AFP. State wildlife rangers safely removed and relocated the crocodile that afternoon. Warning signs were subsequently erected in the area according to environment department officials. It remains unclear whether the animal was a saltwater or freshwater crocodile. Northern Australia is home to an estimated 100,000 saltwater and freshwater crocodiles. – AFP

Israel identifies Ronen Engel as dead hostage returned by Hamas

Israel identifies Ronen Engel as dead hostage returned by Hamas

JERUSALEM : Israel has identified one of two dead hostages returned by Hamas on Saturday as 54-year-old Ronen Engel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed Engel’s identification was completed on Sunday. The military informed Engel’s family that their loved one had been returned to Israel. Israel vowed to spare no effort “until all the fallen hostages are repatriated”. Engel was a resident of Nir Oz kibbutz abducted from his home on October 7, 2023. He was killed by Hamas during the attack and his body taken to Gaza. The Israeli army had announced his death on December 1, 2023. His wife Karina Engel-Bart and their teenagers Mika and Yuval were also abducted while hiding in their safe room. Engel’s family were later freed during the first truce between Israel and Hamas. He worked as a photojournalist and volunteer ambulance driver for Magen David Adom in the Negev region. Under a US-brokered ceasefire agreement, Hamas has returned all 20 surviving hostages and 12 deceased ones. Hamas was required to hand over all hostages, dead and alive, by Monday at 0900 GMT. The militant group says it needs more time and technical assistance to recover remaining bodies from Gaza’s rubble. Delays in finding bodies buried under rubble threaten the fragile ceasefire. – AFP
