Budget 2026 allocates funds for 38 new schools to ease overcrowding

SHAH ALAM: The government has announced the construction of 38 new schools, including nine in Selangor, under Budget 2026 to ensure equitable access to quality education. This initiative directly addresses the state’s rapid population growth and the resulting pressure on educational infrastructure. Residents in fast-growing areas like Puncak Alam and Setia Alam have welcomed the move as a long-awaited solution to overcrowded classrooms. Some parents have been forced to send their children to schools located far from their homes due to a lack of local capacity. Private sector employee Muhammad Aminuralif Mohd Zoki said most existing schools can no longer accommodate the annual increase in student numbers. He believes the persistent overcrowding could negatively affect students’ emotions and motivation to learn. “I believe the construction of new schools will help balance educational needs and ease the pressure on existing infrastructure,” he told Bernama. The new schools are expected to serve the rising populations in Puncak Alam, Setia Alam, and Bandar Baru Kuala Selangor. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a RM66.2 billion allocation for the Ministry of Education when tabling Budget 2026 last Friday. This increased allocation includes funding to upgrade existing facilities and construct the 38 new schools nationwide. Setia Alam resident Fazlisham Aziq described the announcement as a major relief for parents. He highlighted the challenges of transportation, fuel costs, and child safety associated with long commutes to distant schools. “I believe the announcement to build a new school here is very much in line with current needs,” said the workshop owner. Fazlisham also expressed confidence that children are uncomfortable studying in classes with more than 40 students. The nine new schools in Selangor include five secondary schools and four primary schools. The secondary schools are SMK Eco Grandeur, SMK Setia Alam 2, SMK Kota Kemuning 2, SMK Cyberjaya 2, and SMK Bukit Puchong. The primary schools are SK Alam Suria, SK Puchong Permai, SK Taman Desa 3, and SK Pendidikan Khas Kota Damansara. – Bernama

Bullying and family issues main factors in Johor mental health cases

JOHOR BAHRU: Bullying, family conflicts, economic stress, genetic factors, and trauma have been identified as primary causes behind 2,777 individuals seeking follow-up mental health treatment at government health clinics in Johor between January and August this year. Johor Health Department director Dr Mohtar Pungut@Ahmad revealed that the Johor Bahru district recorded the highest number of patients with 641 individuals receiving treatment during this period. He stated that 1,140 individuals from the total patient count were referred for further assessment after undergoing initial mental health screening. Meanwhile, 118 cases required referral to hospitals for more comprehensive evaluation and specialised treatment. Dr Mohtar shared these statistics while officiating the Mentari Johor Bahru and the 2025 World Mental Health Day event. Sultanah Aminah Hospital’s Psychiatry and Mental Health Department head Dr Marina Abd Rahman Sabri also attended the ceremony. Dr Mohtar emphasised that the reported increase in mental health cases highlights the growing need to improve public access to mental health services. He explained that treatment centres like Mentari, operating under Ministry of Health supervision, play a vital role in providing comprehensive mental health services to communities. Mentari offers a community-friendly environment for treatment, recovery, and psychosocial interventions while ensuring mental health services remain accessible during crises. Dr Mohtar encouraged members of the public requiring emotional or psychological support to utilise available mental health helplines including the HEAL Line 15555, KASIH Line 15999, and Befrienders services. – Bernama

Australia launches ad campaign backing teen social ban

Australia launches ad campaign backing teen social ban

SYDNEY : Australia has launched a multimillion-dollar marketing campaign that depicts its world-first ban on social media for teenagers as “for the good of our kids” ahead of its December start date. The A$14 million ($9.05 million) campaign, titled “For The Good Of”, will roll out across TV, billboards, and “ironically” social media starting Sunday, Communications Minister Anika Wells said on Tuesday. Wells said the campaign aims to spread awareness about the changes coming for families, encouraging parents to “start having conversations” about the ban with their children. “It’s called For The Good Of, and it means for the good of our kids. We’re doing these things, ultimately, for the good of young people in Australia,“ she told reporters. The 45-second video shows a number of children absorbed in their phones while a voiceover says: “For the good of Kirsty, for the good of Lucy and Anya, for the good of Sam, for the good of Holly, for the good of Noah, for the good of their wellbeing.” It then adds: “From December 10, people under the age of 16 will no longer have access to social media accounts. It’s part of a new law to keep under-16s safer online.” Australia’s ban was passed into law in November 2024 and aims to delay teens’ ability to set up social media accounts from the current age of 13 until the age of 16. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s centre-left government said research showed the over-use of social media was harming young teens, including causing misinformation, enabling bullying and harmful depictions of body image. Governments around the world are closely watching Australia’s implementation of the ban, while social media platforms have pushed back on it. In a parliamentary hearing on Monday, YouTube said the programme could have “unintended consequences” and would be “extremely difficult” to enforce. The Alphabet-owned video-sharing site has also flagged taking legal action against its inclusion in the ban. Wells, the communications minister, said she was meeting with social media platforms this week, including Meta, TikTok and Snapchat, to “re-enforce the government’s expectation about how they will enforce the law”. “I am confident they understand their obligations under Australian law and they will deliver upon their obligations,“ she said. Malaysia to lead bio-based innovations for water sustainability by 2040

Malaysia to lead bio-based innovations for water sustainability by 2040

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia must continue advancing the use of bio-based and plant-derived technologies as sustainable alternatives to conventional chemical treatments in water and wastewater management. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated that such innovations reduce the nation’s carbon footprint and environmental impact while enhancing resource efficiency and national self-reliance. He emphasised these efforts align with the National Energy Transition Roadmap to ensure water sustainability and environmental stewardship move forward in harmony. Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, spoke while officiating the Malaysia International Water Convention 2025. He stressed that as Malaysia progresses towards Water Sector Transformation 2040, bold steps must be taken to embrace emerging technologies and empower local innovators. The Deputy Prime Minister asserted that Malaysia must not only adopt technologies from abroad but also create, refine, and export its own innovations globally. He highlighted the importance of cultivating a vibrant ecosystem of home-grown startups, researchers, and entrepreneurs to build local intellectual property. Fadillah also launched the NextWave Innovation initiative and the Young Water Professional Mentor-Mentee programme during the event. He described the convention as a catalyst for transformation that unites government, industry, academia, and innovators to harness water’s full potential. A key highlight is the Non-Revenue Water Workshop focusing on efficiency improvement, resource conservation, and long-term sustainability. Fadillah noted that through smart metering, leak detection, and data-driven monitoring, Malaysia is taking bold steps to align with global sustainability goals. He elaborated that the NextWave Innovation initiative bridges the gap between research and application through collaboration between PROTEMP and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. These partnerships represent the collaborative DNA that Malaysia must continue to strengthen for real-world impact. Fadillah announced Malaysia envisions establishing a National Water Hub by 2040 in alignment with the AIR2040 aspirations. This hub will serve as the nerve centre of the nation’s water ecosystem, connecting research, innovation, policy, and industry under one dynamic framework. He concluded that the mission of sustainable water management requires collective responsibility from policymakers, industry players, researchers, and communities. – Bernama
