- Bernama

Israel to partially reopen Gaza private goods trade amid aid crisis

Israel to partially reopen Gaza private goods trade amid aid crisis

JERUSALEM : Israel will partially reopen private sector trade with Gaza to reduce dependence on humanitarian aid, the defence ministry’s civil affairs agency COGAT announced on Tuesday. The move follows months of blockade and conflict with Hamas, which has left Gaza in dire need of basic supplies. “As part of formulating the mechanism, a limited number of local merchants were approved by the defence establishment, subject to several criteria and strict security screening,“ COGAT said. Israel imposed a total blockade on Gaza in March but partially lifted restrictions in May to allow a US-backed private agency to distribute food. Despite resumed aid convoys and airdrops by Arab and European nations, UN experts warn famine is spreading in the war-torn enclave. The new trade mechanism will permit food staples, fruit, vegetables, baby formula, and hygiene products. Deliveries will undergo military inspections to prevent Hamas involvement, with payments made via monitored bank transfers. COGAT reported over 300 aid trucks entered Gaza on Monday, more than recent days, though Hamas disputed the figures, claiming only 95 trucks arrived, many looted amid alleged Israeli-instigated chaos. The UN estimates 500-600 daily truckloads are needed to sustain Gaza’s population. - AFP

Danish zoo sparks outrage with call for animals as predator food

Danish zoo sparks outrage with call for animals as predator food

COPENHAGEN : A Danish zoo has drawn sharp criticism after publicly requesting livestock donations to feed its predators. Aalborg Zoo’s appeal for chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, and horses—to be euthanised and used as food—has ignited debate over ethical animal treatment. “We are looking for small livestock, not pets,“ said Anette Sofie Warncke Nutzhorn, a zoo manager. “It can be for instance a chicken that doesn’t lay eggs anymore.” She defended the practice, stating, “Predators usually catch prey of this size, so it’s like the natural course.” The zoo’s social media post last week invited donors: “If you have an animal that, for various reasons, has to go, you are welcome to donate it to us.” It clarified that only healthy animals would be accepted and euthanised by qualified staff. Public backlash forced the zoo to disable comments due to what it called “hateful” responses. Critics argue the practice normalises unnecessary euthanasia, recalling past controversies like the 2014 killing of giraffe Marius at Copenhagen Zoo, which was dissected publicly before being fed to lions. Warncke Nutzhorn insisted the zoo’s request was routine: “It is a very common practice, we were just sending a friendly reminder.” However, animal rights advocates question the ethics of sourcing food this way, reigniting discussions on zoo management standards. - AFP

Flash flood devastates Himalayan town, 4 dead in Uttarakhand

Flash flood devastates Himalayan town, 4 dead in Uttarakhand

DEHRADUN : Rescue teams rushed to India’s Himalayan region on Tuesday after flash floods tore through a mountain valley, wiping out much of a town and leaving at least four people dead. Videos aired on Indian media showed torrents of muddy water engulfing multi-storey buildings in Dharali, a popular tourist spot in Uttarakhand state. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed that rescue operations were underway “on a war footing.” Senior local official Prashant Arya reported four fatalities but warned the number could increase. “Luckily, most of the people were at a fair in a safe location,“ said an unnamed disaster official. India’s army deployed teams to the area, describing the disaster as “a massive mudslide... triggering a sudden flow of debris and water through the settlement.” Post-flood images released by the military revealed streets buried under thick mud, with some houses submerged up to their rooftops. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences, stating, “No stone is being left unturned in providing assistance to the people.” Chief Minister Dhami attributed the flood to an intense downpour, calling the damage “extremely sad and distressing.” The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert after recording “extremely heavy” rainfall of 21 cm (8 inches) in parts of Uttarakhand. Monsoon-related floods and landslides are frequent in the region, but experts warn climate change and urbanisation are worsening their impact. The UN’s World Meteorological Organization has previously flagged such disasters as a “distress signal” of climate change disrupting global water cycles. - AFP

Iberia investigates ‘Free Palestine’ message on kosher meals

Iberia investigates ‘Free Palestine’ message on kosher meals

MADRID : Spanish airline Iberia has launched an investigation after a passenger who ordered a kosher meal received food packaging marked with the words “Free Palestine.” The incident occurred on a flight from Buenos Aires to Madrid, where several other Jewish passengers reportedly found their meal trays labeled with the initials “FP,“ standing for “Free Palestine.” Argentina’s Jewish umbrella organization, DAIA, condemned the incident as a “serious act of antisemitism” and demanded immediate action from the airline. In a statement posted on X, DAIA said, “We strongly condemn this discriminatory act and have contacted the airline authorities to demand explanations and immediate action.” The post included a photo of a meal tray with a handwritten label reading “Free Palestine.” Kosher meals adhere to Jewish dietary laws, and the incident has raised concerns over discrimination. Iberia confirmed that passengers on the flight, which landed early Tuesday, reported “handwritten pro-Palestinian messages” on their meal packaging. The airline stated, “The Iberia crew documented the incident and took action to assist those affected. The captain personally approached them to apologise on behalf of the airline.” Iberia is conducting an internal investigation and coordinating with catering providers to determine how the labels were added. The airline emphasized its stance against discrimination, stating it “categorically rejects any form of discrimination, incitement to hatred, or behaviour that undermines the dignity of individuals.” This incident follows another controversy last month involving Jewish passengers on a Vueling flight from Valencia, Spain. The airline removed dozens of French Jewish teenagers, citing disruptive behavior, including tampering with safety equipment. Some parents, however, claimed the removal was antisemitic, alleging their children were expelled after one teen sang a Hebrew song. Vueling, like Iberia, is part of the International Airlines Group (IAG). - AFP

UN pushes for global plastics treaty amid pollution crisis in Geneva

UN pushes for global plastics treaty amid pollution crisis in Geneva

GENEVA : Negotiators from 180 countries convened in Geneva on Tuesday for a fresh round of UN-led talks aimed at finalising a global treaty to tackle plastic pollution, described as a “global crisis” by diplomats. The urgency of the issue was underscored as microplastics continue to infiltrate ecosystems, oceans, and even human bodies. Ecuadoran diplomat Luis Vayas Valdivieso, chairing the discussions, warned that plastic pollution is “damaging ecosystems, polluting our oceans and rivers, threatening biodiversity, harming human health, and unfairly impacting the most vulnerable.” He stressed that the responsibility to act lies with the international community. Previous negotiations in Busan, South Korea, collapsed in December after oil-producing nations blocked consensus on production limits. Despite the challenges, UN Environment Programme (UNEP) chief Inger Andersen expressed cautious optimism, stating, “Most countries have said: ‘We’re coming to Geneva to strike the deal’.” Plastic waste has reached alarming levels, with over 400 million tonnes produced annually—half for single-use items. Only 9% is recycled, while 46% ends up in landfills and 22% becomes litter. A Lancet report highlighted plastic pollution as a “grave, growing and under-recognised danger,“ costing $1.5 trillion yearly in health-related losses. Environmental groups, including Greenpeace, demand a treaty that cuts production and bans toxic chemicals. Graham Forbes, Greenpeace’s delegation head, warned against letting “a few countries determine humanity’s future.” Meanwhile, industry representatives argue plastics are vital for healthcare and infrastructure. As talks proceed, an art installation outside the UN—a plastic-submerged replica of Rodin’s “The Thinker”—symbolises the growing burden of pollution. Canadian artist Benjamin Von Wong, behind the piece, urged action: “If you want to protect health, we need to think about toxic chemicals in our environment.” - AFP

Defence closes case in Zayn Rayyan neglect trial, verdict set for Oct 31

Defence closes case in Zayn Rayyan neglect trial, verdict set for Oct 31

PETALING JAYA : The defence team for Ismanira Abdul Manaf, the mother of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin, closed its case today after presenting five witnesses. The court has scheduled the verdict for October 31. Defence counsel Haresh Mahadevan informed the court that no further witnesses would be called following the testimony of child psychologist Dr Noor Aishah Rosli. Judge Dr Syahliza Warnoh set September 8 for written submissions, September 22 for oral replies, and October 31 for the final verdict. Ismanira was ordered to enter her defence on July 21 after the prosecution established a prima facie case. She testified over three days, maintaining her innocence. Dr Noor Aishah testified that WhatsApp messages exchanged between Ismanira and her husband were normal expressions of frustration from a mother caring for an autistic child. She stated, “From a psychological perspective, these should not be viewed as an intention to commit a crime. If you ask anyone, it’s common for messages to a spouse to contain harsh words, but without any intent behind them.” She described the messages as emotional venting rather than evidence of abuse, adding, “I find these kinds of conversations reflect a marital relationship. The language may appear harsh, but it’s just surface-level, idle talk meant only to release emotions.” The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutors Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin, Aqharie Durranie Aziz, and Nur Sabrina Zubairi. Ismanira’s defence team included Haresh Mahadevan, Ramzani Idris, and Lavanesh Haresh. Zayn Rayyan was reported missing on December 5, 2023, and his body was found the next day near his home at Apartment Idaman, Damansara Damai. An autopsy revealed injuries consistent with self-defence. Ismanira and her husband, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, had pleaded not guilty to neglecting their son under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum penalty of RM50,000, 20 years’ imprisonment, or both. Zaim Ikhwan was earlier acquitted of the charge. - Bernama
