UN Security Council to hold emergency session on Gaza hostages

UNITED NATIONS : The UN Security Council will convene an emergency session this week to address the worsening hostage crisis in Gaza, Israel’s ambassador confirmed Sunday. The announcement follows global outcry over newly released videos showing emaciated captives held by Hamas, alongside warnings of famine in the besieged enclave. Danny Danon, Israel’s envoy to the UN, stated the Council “will convene this coming Tuesday for a special emergency session on the dire situation of the hostages in Gaza.” The footage highlights catastrophic humanitarian conditions, with UN experts declaring a “famine is unfolding” due to severe aid restrictions. Israel maintains tight control over aid entry into Gaza, though UN agencies report chaotic distribution and looting. Desperate Palestinians often risk their lives to access limited supplies. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently appealed to the Red Cross for help delivering food to hostages. Hamas’s armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, responded by offering conditional Red Cross access, demanding “humanitarian corridors” be opened across Gaza. The group denied intentionally starving hostages but stated they would receive no special treatment “amid the crime of starvation and siege.” Three recent videos released by Hamas and Islamic Jihad feature two October 7 attack hostages—Rom Braslavski and Evyatar David—appearing frail and malnourished. New Zealand former top cop charged over child porn, bestiality material

WELLINGTON : New Zealand’s former deputy police commissioner lost the right to anonymity Monday after he was charged with possessing child sexual exploitation and bestiality material. Jevon McSkimming was arrested in June and charged with eight counts of possessing objectionable material, but the courts had prevented media from reporting his name or other details of the case. Appearing in Wellington District Court on Monday, McSkimming opted not to seek an extension of the suppression order. His lawyer, Letizea Ord, told Judge Tim Black “there is not a further application in respect of name suppression. It’s accepted that it can lapse today”. He is yet to enter a plea. Asked as he left court if he had a message for the public, McSkimming said: “No”. The 52-year-old is alleged to have possessed child exploitation material and bestiality between specific dates. One of the charges states the offenses happened between July 2020 and December 2024. McSkimming was suspended from his job on full pay in December 2024, when an investigation into his conduct was launched. Details of those allegations cannot be reported. He was on leave for six months before his resignation in May. Judge Black remanded McSkimming on bail, and he will reappear before the court in November. – AFP

THE ringgit opened stronger against the US dollar on Monday as renewed expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut emerged following weaker-than-expected US labour market data. At 8 am, the local currency rose to 4.2350/2550 against the greenback, up from Friday’s close of 4.2750/2815. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid attributed the ringgit’s rebound to disappointing US Non-farm Payroll (NFP) figures. The US Bureau of Labour Statistics reported only 73,000 jobs added in July, well below market forecasts of 110,000. “The weaker labour market strengthens the case for a Fed rate cut in September,“ said Mohd Afzanizam. “The US Dollar Index (DXY) has already dropped to 98.708 points, while the 2-year US Treasury yield fell sharply by 25 basis points to 3.69 per cent last Friday.” He added that the ringgit, which depreciated by 0.22 per cent on Friday, could trade between 4.26 and 4.27 today. However, the local currency weakened against other major currencies, slipping against the Japanese yen, British pound, and euro. In contrast, the ringgit strengthened against regional currencies, rising against the Singapore dollar but dipping slightly against the Thai baht. It also gained against the Philippine peso and Indonesian rupiah. - Bernama
