LIMA : At least one man was killed during violent clashes at an anti-crime rally in Peru’s capital on Wednesday. President Jose Jeri confirmed the death despite his recent accession failing to quell widespread anger against the political establishment. The Ombudsman’s Office reported 102 people injured, including 24 civilians and 78 police officers. Youth-led demonstrations brought thousands of frustrated Peruvians onto streets in Lima and other cities protesting authorities’ failure to address worsening crime. Some protesters attempted to breach security barriers around Congress as night fell according to an AFP correspondent. Others in the crowd threw stones and launched fireworks toward police lines. Police in riot gear responded by firing tear gas to disperse the crowds. Jeri expressed regret for the death of 32-year-old citizen Eduardo Ruiz Sanz in a social media post. The National Human Rights Coordinator suggested the man may have been shot by a plainclothes police officer. AFP images showed a blood-covered police officer who had been struck by a projectile. Jeri claimed the peaceful demonstration had been infiltrated by criminals seeking to cause chaos. Peru has experienced weeks of protests culminating in lawmakers impeaching former president Dina Boluarte last Friday. Protesters blamed Boluarte for surging crime rates and accused her of corruption. Freelancer Amanda Meza expressed general discontent about state inaction on security issues. She noted extortion and contract killings have grown massively throughout Peru. Jeri, a right-wing politician and former congressional leader, became interim president until April elections. Wednesday’s protests were organized by youth collectives, artists’ groups and labor unions. Feminist groups joined rallies against the new president over sexual assault accusations. Prosecutors closed a complaint against Jeri last August due to insufficient evidence. Boluarte’s impeachment followed protests by bus companies, merchants and students against criminal gang shakedowns. Extortion and contract killings have become daily realities across Peruvian society. Gangs including Los Pulpos and Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua operate widely, holding people for ransom. Jeri has vowed to declare war on organized crime to reduce protest tensions. – AFP

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia recorded its lowest number of live births since 1980 with only 414,918 births in 2024, representing a nine per cent decrease from the 455,761 births recorded in 2023. Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin revealed that male babies outnumbered females with 213,919 male births compared to 200,999 female births. The declining birth numbers contributed to a reduction in the crude birth rate from 13.6 births per 1,000 population in 2023 to just 12.2 births per 1,000 population in 2024. Mohd Uzir also noted that the sex ratio at birth decreased from 107.4 males per 100 females in 2023 to 106.4 males per 100 females in 2024. Malay births constituted 65.7 per cent of total live births in 2024 with 272,718 births, down from 67 per cent or 305,494 births in the previous year. Chinese births saw a slight increase from 9.8 per cent to 10.8 per cent, though the actual number rose minimally from 44,818 to 44,914. Indian births declined from 4.4 per cent to 4.3 per cent, with the actual number dropping from 20,064 to 17,914. Every state in Malaysia recorded a decrease in crude birth rate compared to 2023, with Terengganu posting the highest rate at 19.3 births per 1,000 population. Penang recorded the lowest crude birth rate among all states at just 10.1 births per 1,000 population. The total fertility rate fell from 1.7 children per woman in 2023 to 1.6 children per woman in 2024. Malaysia’s fertility rate has remained below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman since 2013, after staying above this threshold between 1970 and 2012. Meanwhile, Malaysia recorded 198,992 deaths in 2024, marking a one per cent increase from the 196,965 deaths recorded in 2023. The crude death rate edged down slightly from 5.9 to 5.8 deaths per 1,000 population despite the increase in total deaths. Male deaths numbered 113,866 while female deaths totalled 85,126 during the year. The 70-74 age group recorded the highest number of deaths at 24,513, representing 12.3 per cent of all fatalities. The 5-9 age group recorded the lowest number of deaths at just 412, accounting for only 0.2 per cent of total mortality. – Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry (MOE) must take time to properly identify the root causes behind the recent surge in tragic incidents involving students before introducing new measures, said former Cabinet minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar. He cautioned the ministry against taking “populist or knee-jerk” actions in response to public outcry, saying that every case including those involving bullying, sexual assault and murder may stem from different underlying problems. “When incidents like these happen, people understandably want swift action and to feel safe sending their children to school. But I believe there are deeper causes beyond just installing CCTV cameras or bringing back corporal punishment,” Khairy said when commenting on the issue of school safety. He said this after officiating Sino Sky Sdn Bhd office in Wisma HLX today. He added that while stern action must be taken against offenders, including investigation, suspension, detention, and prosecution , the ministry must also study the factors contributing to the problem. “If the issue is declining moral values in schools, we need to revisit the education mission and see where we can strengthen it. If it’s about parenting skills, then the government must ensure parents play their role responsibly at home. “If social media influence is part of the problem, then that too must be studied carefully before any action is taken,” he said. Khairy stressed that any solution must be based on a clear understanding of the real causes rather than public pressure. “I support firm action, but don’t rush into decisions. We must diagnose the real cause before prescribing the medicine,” he said. He urged the MOE to convene a comprehensive review to determine the main causes of such cases. “When we give medicine, we must ensure it treats the right illness. Otherwise, it will only make things worse.” When the nation was just rocked by the rape of a minor at a school in Melaka and the murder of a female Form Four student in Bandar Utama, another sexual case has emerged where four students and a former student, aged between 15 to 17, at a school in Baling are being investigated following a statutory gang rape case involving a 15-year-old female student. The group had engaged in sexual activity, including group sex, at several locations within the school between May and August this year, including in classrooms, reported New Straits Time.
