KUALA LUMPUR : The MyMall digital sales platform has achieved RM24.3 million in sales, with 3,407 registered vendors as of July 31, according to Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. Ramanan noted a significant sales increase of RM15 million in the first seven months of 2025. “Micro, small, and medium enterprises (PMKS) are encouraged to register on MyMall and leverage its free marketing space,“ he said. The initiative aims to help entrepreneurs manage rising costs while expanding their online businesses. Ramanan was responding to a query from Lee Chuan How (PH-Ipoh Timor) regarding measures to protect sellers from fee hikes on platforms like Shopee, TikTok, and Lazada. KUSKOP has introduced multiple programmes, including EmpowerPKK, the TikTok Shop Live Hub, and BizClinic by INSKEN, to support entrepreneurs. Collaboration with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) ensures fair e-commerce regulations. “The Malaysian Competition Commission (MyCC) is reviewing the digital economy under the Competition Act to prevent unregulated cost increases,“ Ramanan added, addressing concerns over foreign sellers dominating the market. - Bernama
GAZA : Israel has announced plans to permit a gradual and controlled entry of goods into Gaza through local merchants, aiming to reduce dependence on international aid agencies. The move comes as global monitors warn of famine spreading across the enclave, worsening conditions for hostages held by Hamas. Israel’s military agency COGAT confirmed the cabinet-approved mechanism, which will allow basic food supplies, baby food, fruits, vegetables, and hygiene products into Gaza. “This aims to increase the volume of aid entering the Gaza Strip, while reducing reliance on aid collection by the U.N. and international organisations,“ COGAT stated. However, logistical challenges remain due to widespread destruction in Gaza. Palestinian and UN officials estimate that 600 aid trucks per day are needed to meet humanitarian needs—a figure Israel previously allowed before the war. Recent images of malnourished Palestinians, including children, have drawn global concern. A Hamas-released video showing an emaciated Israeli captive further intensified criticism from Western nations. In response, Israel has taken steps to facilitate aid, including temporary ceasefires in certain areas and protected routes for aid convoys. Hamas has offered to coordinate aid delivery to hostages via the Red Cross, provided Israel permanently opens humanitarian corridors and stops airstrikes during distributions. Meanwhile, tensions persist over aid distribution methods, with the UN rejecting a U.S.-backed organisation, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), citing neutrality concerns. The war, triggered by Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel, has led to over 60,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza health officials. Israel reports 50 hostages still in Gaza, with only 20 believed alive. - Reuters
TOKYO : Japan registered its highest temperature on record at 41.8 degrees Celsius (107.2°F) on Tuesday, with authorities urging residents to stay indoors and warning of potential harm to rice crops. The eastern city of Isesaki in Gunma prefecture surpassed the previous record of 41.2°C set last week in Tamba, Hyogo prefecture, according to the meteorological agency. More than 53,000 people have been hospitalized for heatstroke this summer, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported. “Today is murderously hot,“ said Takeshi Ishikawa, a 63-year-old auto worker in Tokyo. “If it gets to 42 degrees, it would be hotter than my bath that I prepare at 40 degrees.” Japan’s average temperatures have risen steadily, with July marking the third consecutive year of record highs. Meanwhile, the northeastern region near the Sea of Japan faces critically low rainfall, worsening fears over rice yields. Rising heat has also led to increased stink bug infestations in rice-growing areas. Farm Minister Shinjiro Koizumi stressed the urgency of addressing heat-related damage. “We need to act with speed and a sense of crisis to prevent damage,“ he said, announcing government support for pest control and drought measures. Last year’s extreme heat severely impacted rice quality, causing shortages and soaring prices. - Reuters

TOKYO : Mazda Motor announced on Tuesday that it expects a 145.2 billion yen ($987.02 million) impact on its operating profit this fiscal year due to U.S. import tariffs. The Japanese automaker is implementing measures to mitigate the financial strain, including altering shipping routes, ramping up production at its Alabama plant, and adjusting output volumes. Chief Financial Officer Jeffrey Guyton stated that the effect of higher U.S. duties remains “quite significant,“ with exports from Japan facing a 15% tariff and those from Mexico subject to 25%. Without countermeasures, the company could face a 233.5-billion-yen operating profit loss for the year ending March 2026. Mazda has been focusing on boosting sales of its CX-50 crossover SUV, manufactured at its Guanajuato plant in Mexico, which exports vehicles to the U.S. The automaker reported selling approximately 210,000 vehicles in the U.S. during the first half of the year, a 4% increase from the previous year. Despite the challenges, Mazda has projected a full-year operating profit of ¥50 billion for the fiscal year ending March 2026, a sharp decline from the previous year. The company had earlier withheld financial guidance due to uncertainties surrounding U.S. tariffs. - Reuters
