Parents demand school safety action after student stabbing death

PETALING JAYA : Parents are demanding serious follow-up action from school authorities following the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old female student at a secondary school here. The incident has raised deep concerns among parents about their children’s safety levels in educational institutions. Johari Hashim, 58, who has twin sons in Form Two at the affected school, described the incident as extremely shocking. The self-employed father said crimes involving weapons among students were something he had never imagined possible. “I am very shocked by this incident,“ he told Bernama. “In my time, the worst we did was fight and punch each other; we never thought of stabbing or using weapons.” Johari, who lives in Damansara Perdana, hopes school authorities will implement more serious safety measures for students. Another parent, who declined to be named, also urged the school to take action to prevent similar incidents. The parent discovered the incident when arriving to deliver food and saw students being evacuated from the school. “My daughter is also worried after this incident,“ the parent added. A Form One student claimed the suspect entered her classroom immediately after the stabbing while carrying a blood-stained weapon. According to the anonymous student, the transition class student briefly entered her class but didn’t threaten anyone before leaving. “I felt nervous and scared when the male student entered our class holding that weapon,“ she said. The victim was found dead with multiple stab wounds in the female washroom area at 9.30am. Police recovered two sharp weapons believed to have been used in the incident. – Bernama

18 SPM athletes face dilemma over Thailand SEA Games participation

18 SPM athletes face dilemma over Thailand SEA Games participation

MALAYSIAN Chief de Mission for the 2025 Thailand SEA Games, Nurul Huda Abdullah, has expressed concern over 18 national athletes scheduled to sit for this year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. The SPM examination period from November 3 to December 23 clashes directly with the biennial games scheduled for December 9-20. Nurul Huda stated she has not yet received a response from the Ministry of Education regarding possible special arrangements for the affected athletes. “This has caused a dilemma for athletes and their families to decide whether to participate in the biennial games or take the SPM,“ she said after the Team Managers’ Meeting at Wisma OCM. She also highlighted another challenge facing the Malaysian contingent at the Thailand SEA Games. The absence of a games village means organisers will provide hotels for athletes and officials based on their sports events. Nurul Huda said team managers have been instructed to prepare for all eventualities to ensure athlete welfare. “Our contingent will be spread around so many hotels and that will be a big challenge for us,“ she noted. She emphasised that team managers will shoulder huge responsibility for their teams’ welfare during the games. Meanwhile, Nurul Huda announced that a shortlist of potential flag bearers has been prepared. The list will be submitted to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for final selection of the suitable candidate. – Bernama

Greek unions strike again against proposed 13-hour workday reform

Greek unions strike again against proposed 13-hour workday reform

ATHENS : Greek transport and services faced major disruptions on Tuesday during the second union strike this month against proposed labour reforms. Unions organised a 24-hour walkout protesting government plans to introduce an optional 13-hour workday. The mobilisation shut down public and municipal services while paralysing ferry and train operations across the country. Flight services remained unaffected despite the widespread industrial action. Urban transport in Athens operated on significantly reduced hours throughout the strike day. Protest demonstrations were scheduled in Athens and other major Greek cities during the daytime. The government insists the 13-hour workday remains optional ahead of Wednesday’s parliamentary vote. Opposition parties and unions counter that workers could face dismissal risks if they refuse longer hours. This marks the second general strike on this issue following a similar walkout on October 1. Labour Minister Niki Kerameus defended the legislation during a television interview on SKAI TV. She stated the new law would strengthen employee rights while facilitating business operations. Kerameus highlighted expanded benefits for working mothers and staff negotiation rights for a four-day week. Greece’s current legal working day stands at eight hours with provisions for paid overtime. The country has previously legalised a six-day working week for high-demand sectors like tourism. – AFP
