LTAT Hero Entrepreneur programme boosts MAF veterans’ income by 216%

BUTTERWORTH : The Ministry of Defence has effectively empowered Malaysian Armed Forces veterans and improved their socio-economic well-being through the Armed Forces Fund Board’s Hero Entrepreneur programme. Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari said the programme, introduced last year, successfully produced 29 veteran entrepreneurs in its first phase with an average income increase of 216%. He described this achievement as a remarkable success reflecting the strong entrepreneurial potential of MAF veterans when given proper opportunities and guidance. Adly stated that more than 60% of MAF veterans venture into entrepreneurship after retirement, necessitating support through knowledge enhancement in financial management and business operations. He confirmed the programme will proceed with a second phase this year involving 35 new MAF veteran entrepreneurs in collaboration with the Armed Forces Ex-Servicemen Affairs Corporation. The new phase combines six months of digital and physical coaching sessions focusing on financial literacy, innovation and market access to strengthen veteran-owned enterprises. Adly added that the participating entrepreneurs are involved in various business sectors including food and beverage, retail and manufacturing. LTAT chief executive Mohamad Ashraf Md Radzi said the Hero Entrepreneur reflects LTAT’s commitment under the MADANI Economy framework to expand financial inclusion. He stated that the programme’s success proves economic empowerment and social progress can go hand in hand within an integrated ecosystem. – Bernama

Melaka spent over RM600,000 repairing 39 houses since January

MELAKA : The state government has spent RM641,450 to repair 39 houses across Melaka since January 1 this year. State Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee senior chairman Datuk Rais Yasin confirmed the expenditure through the Melaka Housing Board. He stated that all repaired houses are spread across 13 state constituencies including Kelebang. Rais explained that the cost of repairing each house depends entirely on the extent of damage sustained. “For example, the two houses repaired in the Kelebang constituency, which were handed over today, involved an allocation of RM40,000,” he told reporters at Kampung Pinang. He spoke after the Melaka Rumahku (Repair) Programme organised by LPM alongside the Kelebang constituency ‘Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat’ programme. The event was also attended by Kelebang assemblyman Datuk Lim Ban Hong. Rais noted that most repaired homes were dilapidated or old structures. He identified the roof as the most commonly damaged part, making these houses unsafe for inhabitants. The Melaka Rumahku (Repair) Programme operates under the Melaka Housing Board. A separate allocation of RM1.3 million has been spent on constructing various categories of new homes for state residents. Programme recipient Poniah Ahmad expressed gratitude for receiving a more comfortable home. The 75-year-old said her house roof had been damaged and leaking for the past three years. She described having trouble sleeping whenever it rained or during strong winds. Poniah revealed that her house is more than 50 years old. Her seven children could not afford repair costs due to financial constraints. “In this house, I live with my two grandchildren and four children, including one who is a single mother, whom I depend on,” she said. She thanked the Kelebang assemblyman and state government for helping repair her damaged roof through LPM. – Bernama

Zelensky meets Trump seeking Tomahawk missiles amid Putin summit plans

WASHINGTON: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky meets Donald Trump at the White House seeking American-made Tomahawk missiles while the US president prepares for another summit with Russia’s Vladimir Putin. Zelensky makes his third Washington visit since Trump returned to office following a disastrous televised confrontation in February and a reconciliation meeting in August. Trump announced his planned meeting with Putin in Budapest on the eve of Zelensky’s visit as part of a fresh effort to reach a peace deal ending Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine had hoped Zelensky’s trip would increase pressure on Putin through acquiring long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles capable of striking deep into Russian territory. Trump appears determined to pursue another diplomatic breakthrough following last week’s Gaza ceasefire deal he brokered. The US president described his Thursday call with Putin as very productive and confirmed they would meet in Budapest within two weeks. Trump expressed hope for separate but equal meetings with both Putin and Zelensky without providing further details. Zelensky stated upon arriving in Washington that he hoped Trump’s Middle East success would help end Russia’s devastating war against Ukraine. The Ukrainian president posted on social media platform X that momentum from curbing terror and war in the Middle East should assist in stopping Russia’s aggression. Zelensky insisted that Moscow’s willingness to negotiate increased when it heard discussions about providing Tomahawks to Ukraine. The Ukrainian leader met with defense contractor Raytheon officials on Friday to discuss cooperation and potential joint production of Tomahawk missiles and Patriot systems. Zelensky also held talks with Lockheed Martin regarding F-16 fighter jet manufacturing. Trump cast doubt on Ukraine receiving the coveted weapons by expressing concerns about depleting American military supplies. The US president told reporters that America needs to maintain its own missile stocks and questioned what could be done for Ukraine. Trump revealed that Putin disapproved when he raised the possibility of providing Tomahawks to Ukraine during their phone conversation. The Kremlin confirmed immediate preparations for the Budapest summit following what it described as an extremely frank and trustful discussion between Putin and Trump. Putin’s top aide Yuri Ushakov told journalists that providing Tomahawks would not change battlefield conditions and would damage peace prospects. Trump’s relationships with both Putin and Zelensky have experienced significant fluctuations since he returned to the White House in January. The US president has shown increasing frustration with Putin after their Alaska meeting failed to produce war resolution. Zelensky has regained Trump’s support following their difficult Oval Office encounter where the Ukrainian president faced criticism for his attire and approach. The Ukrainian leader returned in August wearing formal business attire and accompanied by numerous Western leaders demonstrating solidarity. – AFP

PM Anwar warns schools not to protect bullies or conceal cases

PM Anwar warns schools not to protect bullies or conceal cases

PUTRAJAYA : Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim issued a firm reminder to schools and parents to fully cooperate in addressing bullying in educational institutions. He warned them against protecting perpetrators for the sake of preserving a school’s image. Anwar stated that some school administrators and parent-teacher associations tend to downplay or conceal bullying cases. He noted they often see these incidents as minor or non-serious matters. Such attitudes only risk worsening the issue in the long term according to the Prime Minister. “A reminder to schools: do not protect bullies, even in minor cases,“ he told reporters after performing Friday prayers at Surau Jannatul Firdaus PPAM Seruling in Precinct 5. “Bullying is still a crime,“ Anwar emphasized. “Not everything should be considered a light offence,“ he added. The Prime Minister addressed teachers who might still uphold outdated educational approaches. He stressed the need for reform within the education system. “While it is clearly unacceptable to hit or injure students, especially on their heads, teachers should still be allowed to correct, advise, or take reasonable disciplinary action,“ Anwar said. He also commented on the stance of certain human rights or liberal groups that strongly oppose any disciplinary measures by teachers. Anwar acknowledged the need for restraint in disciplinary approaches. He said flexibility should be allowed in managing discipline under strict conditions. – Bernama
