Sri Lanka arrests Rajapaksa ex-minister for corruption over illegal claims

COLOMBO : Sri Lanka’s anti-corruption authorities arrested a former minister from the influential Rajapaksa family on Wednesday. Shasheendra Rajapaksa, nephew of ex-presidents Mahinda and Gotabaya Rajapaksa, was detained over alleged illegal compensation claims. The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) stated he coerced officials into paying for damages on state-owned land. “He misused state land, claimed compensation he was not entitled to, and committed the offence of corruption,“ CIABOC said in a statement. This marks the first Rajapaksa arrest since President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s government took office in September 2024. The government had pledged to investigate corruption linked to the Rajapaksa family’s rule. Sri Lanka faced its worst economic crisis in 2022, leading to Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s ousting amid mass protests. Shasheendra’s cousins, Namal and Yoshitha Rajapaksa, are also facing money laundering charges. Yoshitha claimed funds came from a gem gift, but the elderly relative could not verify the source. Mahinda Rajapaksa’s brother-in-law, Nishantha Wickramasinghe, was charged for losses at SriLankan Airlines. Basil Rajapaksa, another brother and former minister, is also embroiled in money laundering allegations. - AFP

He stated that the relationship between the judiciary and AGC is built on mutual respect and shared responsibility. The AGC remains committed to defending Malaysia’s legal system and collaborating with the judiciary. Mohd Dusuki assured efforts to improve judicial procedures without compromising integrity. The legal service stands ready to support the Chief Justice in administering justice with fairness. Malaysian Bar president Datuk Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab acknowledged the Chief Justice’s pivotal leadership role. Japan to import Ford F-150 trucks under new US trade deal

Japan to import Ford F-150 trucks under new US trade deal

TOKYO : Japan will begin importing Ford F-150 pickup trucks under a revised trade agreement with the US. US President Donald Trump confirmed the deal, stating Japan will accept US vehicle safety standards. The new arrangement includes a 15% reciprocal tariff, down from a previously threatened 25%. Trump praised the deal in a CNBC interview, calling the F-150 “very beautiful” and predicting strong sales. Japanese automakers sell millions of cars in the US annually, but American vehicles remain rare in Japan. Ford exited the Japanese market nearly a decade ago due to low demand for large vehicles. The F-150’s width of 2.4 metres makes it impractical for many Japanese roads. Disagreements persist over when Japan’s 27.5% auto tariffs will drop to 15%. A recent US executive order suggested the 15% cap applies only to the EU, not Japan. Japan’s tariffs envoy Ryosei Akazawa is in Washington to clarify the agreement’s details. Akazawa aims to ensure the US implements the tariff changes by Thursday as planned. Trump also claimed Japan would invest $550 billion in the US, retaining 90% of profits. Japanese officials clarified the investment would mostly involve loans and guarantees. - AFP

Penang plans cable car link from Botanical Gardens to Gurney Bay

GEORGE TOWN : The Penang government has asked Hartasuma Sdn Bhd to study a proposed cable car route linking the Botanical Gardens to Gurney Bay. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the study is in its early stages, and the state will assess its viability. “Gurney Bay is another iconic tourist attraction, therefore it makes sense to connect the Botanical Gardens with Gurney Bay via cable car as well.” He added that the 2.5-kilometre route could become a major tourism draw if feasible. Chow clarified that no final decision has been made on the implementing company yet. Hartasuma, a local rail industry expert, partnered with Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH for the Penang Hill cable car project. The Penang Hill project, awarded via a Public-Private Partnership, will transport 1,400 passengers hourly. The 2.73-kilometre route includes three stations: Garden Station, Turn Station, and Hill Station. A multi-storey car park and commercial plaza are also part of the development. – Bernama
