KUALA LUMPUR : Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to extend a fragile ceasefire after recent deadly clashes along their shared border. The truce follows five days of hostilities last month that left at least 43 people dead. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim mediated the ceasefire as ASEAN chair, with backing from US President Donald Trump and Chinese negotiators. The agreement mandates a halt to all weapons use, including attacks on civilians and military targets. “Both sides agree to a ceasefire involving all types of weapons, including attacks on civilians and civilian objects and military objectives of either side, in all cases and all areas,“ the joint statement said. The deal also prohibits any violations under any circumstances. Initial breaches were reported, but skirmishes along the 800-kilometre border have since diminished. Thai and Cambodian defence officials signed the agreement in Kuala Lumpur after three days of talks. Thai Deputy Defence Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit and Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Seiha confirmed a freeze on troop movements and patrols. “We are here for a detailed ceasefire arrangement to stop bloodshed and the suffering by soldiers and civilians of both sides,“ Tea Seiha said. The statement calls for another meeting within a month and urges both sides to avoid spreading misinformation. US ambassador Edgard Kagan warned that tensions remain high despite the agreement. “We have to be honest and say that there is still a very high level of tension, there’s a high level of distrust,“ he said. The conflict stems from a century-old border dispute linked to French colonial-era demarcations. Last month’s violence displaced over 300,000 people, marking the deadliest clashes in over a decade. – AFP

JERUSALEM : Israeli military chief Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir vowed to continue expressing the military’s position “without fear” ahead of a key security cabinet meeting. The meeting is expected to discuss war plans for Gaza amid reported disagreements between the cabinet and Zamir. “We will continue to express our position without fear, in a pragmatic, independent, and professional manner,“ Zamir said in a military statement. Israeli media reported the security cabinet would meet later in the day, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu likely seeking approval for a full Gaza takeover. Defence Minister Israel Katz earlier stated the military must execute any government decision on Gaza, following reports Zamir opposed the plan. “We are not dealing with theory—we are dealing with matters of life and death, with the defence of the state,“ Zamir emphasised. He added the military would act with “responsibility, integrity, and determination” for Israel’s security. Katz affirmed the military must respect government policies while acknowledging Zamir’s right to express his stance in appropriate forums. – AFP

PARIS : Red paint and slogans were found at the entrance of Israeli airline El Al’s offices in Paris. Israel has called on French authorities to take action against what it describes as a “barbaric act”. Anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian messages, including “Free Palestine” and “El Al Genocide Airline”, were scrawled on the building. The vandalism occurred overnight between Wednesday and Thursday, covering the entrance and pavement in red paint. Israel’s Transport Minister Miri Regev condemned the act on social media platform X. She urged French law enforcement to identify and punish those responsible. Regev linked the incident to French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent statements on Palestinian statehood. Israel’s ambassador to France, Joshua Zarka, visited the site and called the act “terrorism”. He said the vandalism aimed to intimidate El Al employees and Israeli citizens. El Al confirmed no employees were present during the incident. The airline reiterated its condemnation of violence, particularly anti-Semitic acts. Earlier in June, Jewish sites in Paris were targeted with green paint. Three Serbs were arrested in connection with those incidents. The ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict has resulted in significant casualties. Hamas’s October 2023 attack killed 1,219 people, mostly civilians. Forty-nine hostages remain in Gaza, with 27 presumed dead. The Israeli offensive has claimed over 61,000 lives in Gaza, according to local health authorities. – AFP
