Gig Workers’ Bill 2025 to be tabled in Dewan Rakyat on Aug 14

Gig Workers’ Bill 2025 to be tabled in Dewan Rakyat on Aug 14

KUALA LUMPUR : The Gig Workers’ Bill 2025 will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat for its first reading on August 14. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed the second reading will follow on August 26. He explained that the second reading will involve detailed discussions and debates by MPs from both government and opposition benches. A simple majority vote will be sufficient for the bill to pass, without requiring a two-thirds majority. Ahmad Zahid shared these updates during the *Sembang Santai Teh Tarik Industri Gig* session organised by the Human Resources Ministry (KESUMA). The event was attended by gig industry representatives and stakeholders, including Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong and his deputy Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad. At a press conference, Ahmad Zahid highlighted the need for greater awareness among gig workers regarding social security contributions. He noted that only 188,000 p-hailing and 132,000 e-hailing workers are currently contributing to the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS). This figure represents a small fraction of the 1.12 million workers in Malaysia’s gig economy. Sim added that Malaysia will become the 16th country globally to enact legislation specifically protecting gig workers. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has shown interest in Malaysia’s approach, recognising its comprehensive yet balanced framework. Sim revealed that Malaysia’s bill was developed after studying legal frameworks in 15 other countries, including Singapore, the Philippines, the US, and India. During his visit to the ILO in Geneva last June, Sim noted strong international interest in Malaysia’s gig worker protections. The drafting process involved 40 engagement sessions with around 4,000 stakeholders, including workers, employers, and NGOs. Sim emphasised the government’s efforts to balance worker protections with the gig economy’s competitiveness. The bill aims to harmonise diverse interests while ensuring fair treatment for gig workers. - Bernama

Barcelona remove Ter Stegen as captain amid fitness dispute

Barcelona remove Ter Stegen as captain amid fitness dispute

BARCELONA have temporarily removed Marc-Andre ter Stegen as club captain amid an ongoing dispute over his fitness status. The club confirmed the decision in an official statement released on Thursday. “As a consequence of the disciplinary proceedings initiated against player Marc-Andre ter Stegen, and until such proceedings are definitively resolved, the club... has decided to temporarily remove him as captain of the first football team,“ Barca said. Vice-captain Ronald Araujo will assume the captaincy in Ter Stegen’s absence. Reports suggest the conflict stems from the goalkeeper’s refusal to be classified as a long-term injury case by La Liga. Such a designation would allow Barcelona to reduce his salary from their official wage bill. The club continues to grapple with financial fair play regulations ahead of the new La Liga season. Failure to comply could prevent Barcelona from registering new signings. Ter Stegen underwent back surgery in late July after two injury-plagued seasons. He has declined to authorise the release of his medical records to La Liga officials. This refusal blocks Barcelona’s attempt to list him as a long-term absentee. The 33-year-old faces competition from summer arrival Joan Garcia and veteran Wojciech Szczesny. Szczesny earned a contract extension after deputising during last season’s title-winning campaign. As the last remaining member of Barcelona’s 2015 Champions League-winning squad, Ter Stegen risks severe penalties. La Liga rules permit contract termination for non-compliance with injury protocols. Barcelona will partially reopen the renovated Camp Nou later this month. The club’s financial struggles persist despite recent on-field success. - AFP

Indian Super League clubs meet to salvage football tournament future

Indian Super League clubs meet to salvage football tournament future

NEW DELHI : Indian Super League clubs held urgent talks with football authorities on Thursday to rescue the country’s top competition from potential collapse. The tournament faces uncertainty due to an unresolved rights agreement between the All India Football Federation and commercial partner Football Sports Development Limited. The current deal expires on December 8 with no renewal finalised, creating chaos just weeks before the usual September-April season. Three clubs including former champions Bengaluru FC have stopped paying player and staff salaries amid the uncertainty. Pre-season preparations remain on hold across the league as stakeholders scramble for solutions. AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey remained hopeful after meeting representatives from all 13 ISL clubs in New Delhi. “We are hoping to have ISL this season, though it may be a bit late,“ Chaubey told reporters. The federation proposed potential format changes to salvage the tournament despite the delayed start. Renewal negotiations for the 2010 agreement stalled after India’s Supreme Court intervened in a separate case involving AIFF’s constitution. The impasse has left over 5,000 players, coaches and staff in limbo with no clear path forward. Chaubey confirmed another round of club meetings would occur soon to find practical solutions. Regarding unpaid salaries, the AIFF chief stated “AIFF is not going to interfere in how clubs operate”. Launched in 2014 with star signings like Alessandro Del Piero, the ISL now battles declining viewership and sponsor withdrawals. The league’s troubles reflect wider challenges facing Indian football despite earlier optimism about its growth potential. - AFP

Trump seeks new US census excluding undocumented immigrants

Trump seeks new US census excluding undocumented immigrants

WASHINGTON : US President Donald Trump has directed officials to develop a new census that excludes undocumented immigrants. The move comes as Republican-led states aim to reshape voter maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Trump demanded a “new and highly accurate” census based on data from the 2024 election. He stated that undocumented individuals “WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS” in a social media post. The US Constitution mandates a census every 10 years counting all persons, including undocumented residents. The next official census is scheduled for 2030, though preparations have already begun. Trump did not specify whether he seeks an early survey or changes to the 2030 count. Excluding undocumented migrants in 2020 would have cost California, Florida, and Texas one House seat each. Census data also determines electoral college votes and federal funding allocations worth trillions of dollars. Trump previously tried adding a citizenship question to the census but was blocked by the Supreme Court. The court did not rule on whether undocumented individuals could be excluded from the count. A March study found that a citizenship question could reduce census accuracy. Experts warn it may discourage Latino and Asian American households from participating. The push coincides with Texas Republicans proposing electoral maps that could gain them five House seats. Other Republican governors are considering similar moves to protect their narrow House majority. Democrats have threatened countermeasures in states like New York and California. – AFP
