AI chatbot Grok misidentifies Gaza famine photo as Yemen

PARIS: An image by AFP photojournalist Omar al-Qattaa shows a severely malnourished girl in Gaza amid Israel’s blockade. Social media users questioned Grok, Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, about the photo’s origin. Grok incorrectly stated the image depicted a Yemeni child from 2018. The photo actually shows nine-year-old Mariam Dawwas in Gaza City on August 2, 2025. Before the war, Mariam weighed 25 kilograms, her mother told AFP. Now, she weighs only nine kilograms and survives mostly on milk, which is “not always available.” When challenged, Grok insisted it does not spread fake news and relies on verified sources. However, the chatbot later repeated the same incorrect claim about the photo’s origin. Grok has previously generated controversial responses, including praise for Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. Louis de Diesbach, a researcher in technological ethics, highlighted AI’s limitations. He described AI tools as “black boxes” with unclear reasoning behind their responses. Grok’s biases align with Elon Musk’s ideological leanings, according to Diesbach. AI chatbots are not designed for verifying facts but for generating content, he explained. Another AFP photo of a starving Gazan child was also misidentified by Grok as being from Yemen. Diesbach warned against relying on AI for factual accuracy, calling chatbots “friendly pathological liars.” Mistral AI’s Le Chat also misidentified the Gaza famine photo as Yemeni. AI’s training data and alignment phase influence its responses, making errors persistent. Experts urge caution when using AI tools for fact-checking due to their unreliable nature. - AFP

German Mueller signs season-long deal with Vancouver Whitecaps

FORMER Germany and Bayern Munich forward Thomas Mueller has signed a season-long deal with Major League Soccer (MLS) side Vancouver Whitecaps, the Canadian club said on Wednesday Mueller, who turns 36 next month, decided to leave Bayern at the end of last season after 25 years with the German champions, helping them win 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies. Mueller has signed for the rest of the 2025 season, with the club holding an option to keep him in 2026 as a Designated Player -- a status that allows MLS teams to pay top salaries outside the league's salary cap. “I’m looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship,“ Mueller said in a statement. “I’ve heard great things about the city, but first and foremost I’m coming to win.” “This is a statement signing by our club and our ownership-- a transformative moment for our club and our city. We are proud to welcome Thomas to Vancouver,“ Whitecaps CEO and sporting director Axel Schuster said. Mueller made 131 appearances for Germany, scoring 45 goals, and was instrumental in their 2014 World Cup triumph. He scored 250 goals and registered 276 assists from 756 appearances for Bayern across all competitions. The playmaker helped Bayern reach the Club World Cup quarter-finals in the United States last month, where they lost to eventual runners-up Paris St Germain. Mueller is scheduled to arrive in Vancouver on August 13. Vancouver, who are second in the Western Conference, visit San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday - REUTERS

UK seeks clarification from China over redacted London embassy plans

UK seeks clarification from China over redacted London embassy plans

LONDON: The British government has formally asked China to provide explanations regarding partially redacted documents submitted for its new embassy project in London. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner sent a letter to the Chinese government’s representative firm DP9, seeking clarity on sections obscured for security reasons. The proposed embassy site, purchased by Beijing in 2018 for $327 million, is located near the Tower of London and was once home to the Royal Mint. Local authorities previously rejected China’s initial plans in 2022, citing concerns from residents and human rights advocates. China resubmitted nearly identical proposals in July 2024, reigniting debate over the project. The UK government has given Beijing until August 20 to respond to the latest request for transparency. The embassy complex, if approved, would become the largest diplomatic facility in Britain. The controversy comes as the Labour government attempts to recalibrate relations with China. Critics argue the project’s lack of transparency raises broader concerns about Beijing’s influence in the UK. Supporters view it as an opportunity to strengthen bilateral ties through diplomatic infrastructure. - AFP

Rare first edition of ‘The Hobbit’ sells for £43,000 at UK auction

Rare first edition of ‘The Hobbit’ sells for £43,000 at UK auction

LONDON: A rare first edition of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” sold for £43,000 at auction this week after being discovered during a house clearance in southwest England. The book, purchased by a UK private collector, is one of only 1,500 original copies printed in 1937. Auctioneum, the auction house handling the sale, stated that just a few hundred of these first editions are believed to survive today. Bidders worldwide pushed the final price to over four times the auction house’s initial estimate. “It’s a wonderful result, for a very special book,“ said Auctioneum rare books specialist Caitlin Riley. The surviving copies from the first print run are now among the most coveted items in modern literature, according to Auctioneum. The book was found during a routine house clearance after the owner’s passing, hidden in an ordinary bookcase. “Nobody knew it was there,“ Riley remarked. “It was just a run-of-the-mill bookcase,“ she added. Riley immediately recognised it as an early edition of “The Hobbit” but was stunned to confirm it was a genuine first edition. “I couldn’t believe my eyes,“ she said, describing it as an “unimaginably rare find”. The copy features Tolkien’s original black-and-white illustrations and is bound in light green cloth. It belonged to botanist Hubert Priestley, whose family library preserved the book for decades. Auctioneum suggested Priestley and Tolkien likely knew each other through mutual connections at the University of Oxford. Both corresponded with author C.S. Lewis, another Oxford contemporary. “The Hobbit” has sold over 100 million copies globally and inspired the “Lord of the Rings” series. The books were later adapted into a blockbuster film franchise in the 2000s. A first edition with Tolkien’s handwritten Elvish note previously sold for £137,000 at Sotheby’s in 2015. - AFP
